"Safe hex"...good one! Never heard it before.
The purpose of System Restore is to restore only the essential underpinnings
of Windows, to get you back to the GUI. From the GUI, you have access to
Windows' many troubleshooting resources. System Restore provides users with
the resources to try to fix their system's problems.
Moreover, if any one or more of your restore points becomes corrupted,
System Restore is unusable: You have to erase all your restore points and
start over.
On the other hand, the beauty of imaging your system partition - that's the
one with Windows and all your software - is that you create an exact,
bit-for-bit copy of your system partition in just minutes. Now you have a
known good installation that you can return to in just minutes. It's so much
easier than the time and hassle of doing a clean install of Windows and all
your software.
