[SOLVED] Should I upgrade CPU/GPU now or wait?

I'm currently running a system with the following specs:

Ryzen 3600X
MSI B550 Unify
PowerColor 6700XT Red Devil GPU
32gb (2 x 16) DDR4 3600 RAM
850W 80+ gold PSU

I'm wondering if I should look at upgrading now to a 5800/5900x and a 6900xt, or wait for the next gen of everything to come out later this year/early next year?

I can probably get $850 for the GPU/CPU in today's market. And the new CPU/GPU will cost me around $2000, plus another $150-$200 to move to a 1000w PSU.

I use my system for work, as well as gaming (1440p/144hz monitor, playing AC Valhalla, RDR2, and similar games)

Would it be worth doing it now?

I too have an R5 3600 powered by 1650 Super, i would suggest to either upgrade to the 5000 series CPU or OC your 3600, and upgrade your GPU now since you game at 1440p, as the resolution increases the load on GPU increases, for eg an 3600 paired with an RTX 3070 gave a performance in 1440p or 4K with good FPS almost on par with the high end CPUS. New generation will need a new motherboard and you never know about the other components, except the GPU.

A 6900XT will cost you a small fortune right now. At 144hz there is a benefit to having more than a 3600X, you'll get smoother more consistent frame rates with a 5000 chip.. If you were to upgrade then I would go to a 5900X to make it worth your while. You have a good motherboard so no need to replace that, easy 5 minute upgrade.

It's not that I'm dissatisfied. I'm more thinking about if it would make sense now, if I can get 3-5 years from the upgrade, as opposed to upgrading again in 1-2 years.

I can get a 6900xt for about $1600. A 5800x will run me about $375, and a 5900x will be about $540. I can sell the CPU/GPU to make up some of that, and I've got the money to spare. I just don't want to spend $2k simply to spend it

For the 6000 series, AMD is changing the socket, so my MB won't work with it.

The 5000 series is the last that works with this socket

It's not that I'm dissatisfied. I'm more thinking about if it would make sense now, if I can get 3-5 years from the upgrade, as opposed to upgrading again in 1-2 years.

With the gpu’s assuming the market has returned to normal at $1600 gpu bought in 2 years time will destroy anything you can buy today. So unless you are dissatisfied with gpu performance you are better off waiting.

As for cpu it might be good to get the 5800X3D when it releases. AMD claim it will be the fastest gaming cpu when released. Even if it’s not, it’s still going to be close. It should get maximum life out of your AM4 & DDR4 setup. As long as I can find one and the price isn’t too high I plan to drop one in my system that’s running a 3080 and 3700X.
