Should i upgrade from E5500 dual core to core i3 ??

If i upgrade to core i3 3220 from E5500 is it worth the cost?? because Id have to buy a new mother board as well. i have HD 7790 as my Gpu. will upgrading increase my FPS in games?? If so by how much?? This upgrade makes sense or should i wait a couple more months and try to make some more money and get an i5?
lastly does hyper threading tech of I3 help in gaming???

As I have said, and someone agreed with me, whatever you do, if you upgrade buy a quad core or better. Otherwise you're throwing your money away, and you won't see "twice the performance" from the i3

I game on an i5 3317u at 2.4ghz with 640m and its just about enough as in my is close to or on the limit but plays game fine near 60fps. At 3.3ghz you should be fine on most games. i5 quad for sure is better. 8350rocks doesn't get the fact that the i3 outperforms core 2 quads and phenom 2x4s at a lot of games and even the fx8350 on tomshardware.

i3 beats amd quad core here with a gtx680 which really needs quads for crysis 3:

Amazingly enough the i3 that should not be wasted money on beats the fx8350 but these are for certain games but still impressive.

The only other cpu you really can consider is the fx6300 but that consumes over 100w more electricity compared to the i3 3220 for slightly better multithreaded performance but not as good gaming performance except 1 or 2 games.

edit: one more thing my i5 3317u is about 2.2x faster at encoding and as a gaming cpu score wise over my 2ghz c2d p7350 I had while taking so little power I was amazed it took 26w for whole laptop at 100% cpu encoding or cinebench.

Get the i3 3220 if its cheap, how much is it exactly. If its rip off price then get an i5 or fx6300. Look on ebay, dell outlet etc, you normally get cheap machines or cpus from there. i3 are designed to play games fine with mid-high end gpu, just not the top end gpus as that is what the i5 is for.

Here in pakistan it cost 12,000 rs and a new core i5 costs 19,000 rs . and no ebay or dell outlet

All I am saying is that unless you have something beastly like a gtx670 or 680 or 7970 etc you won't see any real bottleneck with an i3. If 8350rocks actually used an intel hyperthreaded dual core he will realise they pack a lot of punch beating core 2 quads and phenom 2 quads at gaming. He doesn't realise just because it has 2 cores and 4 threads that its a beast in terms of performance in games.

Look gta 4with gt 640 and i3 3220 at 1080p made light work of by i3 3220. With better graphics cards you get like 60fps in gta 4 maxred out a well known cpu demanding game.

Well just get the i3 if you are on a budget but if you can afford the i5 get it and then all you have to do in the future is upgrade the graphics card.

Im on a budget and i too think that core i3 is best option for HD7790 and It can easily play games at high if not ultra settings at 30 Fps since my resolution is only 1440 X 900. What do you say?

I find it hard to believe, im not saying that you are lying. Actually im grateful to you for your replies. But when i lowered the resolutions of crysis 3 the performance at my current rig actually increased. It became playable at med settings at 1280X720

That's because Crysis 3 is killing your GPU...and your CPU is not quite as deficient running it. As I said, it reduces GPU load. Upgrading your GPU would go a long way toward making your current rig play games better. If I were you, I would stick a higher end card in your current rig and save some money to upgrade the whole thing later...then you can take your newer GPU into the next build. Go to something like the HD 7870 XT for ~$250

8350rocks the i3 3220 beats pheonom 2x4s and core 2 quads at gaming, its not as slow as you think. Anyway the i3 3220 is about 2.3x faster probably at video encoding or in terms of cinebench or physics score on 3dmark11 then the e5500. An i3 3220 is perfect for mid range graphics card like the 7790.

4728 3dmark11 physics score which is similar to a phenom 2 x4 965be. Whats more amazing is the actual i3 3220 takes 20w to run on hw monitor taking away motherboard power consumption, hdds etc.

A friend of mine is selling me the core i3 2120 for about 9,000 Rs where as the new core i3 3220 is 12,500 Rs. Should i spend 2500 Rs more on third generation ? Is there a huge difference of performance in both??

Yeah but if i buy a core i5 now i wont work any better with HD7790 than the core i3 will. Do you agree that core i3 is the RECOMMENDED CPU for the Gpu i have? Will i core i5 work better with the Hd7790? The answer is no it wont. Infact HD7790 will bottleneck the core i5 at higher details then i will have to buy a new GPU. And im not going to buy a new gpu for 3 years. Pakistan is a poor country. here electronics is very expensive . if a core i3 in USA costs 120 dollars here it costs 160 dollars !!
