Hey all,
Was recently just messing around looking around on amazon, and I stumbled across the I7-9700k for 290$, and I couldn't believe it. I currently have a 7700k, paired with 32gb Trident Z @3200mhz, and a RTX 2070 Super, that is driving my 1440p 165hz monitor. I've recently taken up streaming again, and even though I am using an external PC to stream from, my CPU is loaded at 100%, and causing me to get less than my monitors 165hz. Now, I take a peak at my gpu while gaming, and it's settled around 50-60% usage in most cases, and I am planning to upgrade to a 240hz 1440p monitor, and by the fact my CPU is loaded to 100% already, I am figuring that I won't see 240hz in game (primarily apex legends).

If I go on ebay, I have a cpu that can handle 5ghz, and 5.1 with sufficient cooling, which I could likely sell for around 250$, as well as a motherboard that would probably sell for nearly 100$. Is this the time to upgrade? The CPU is 120$ off on amazon, and the motherboard is around 40$ off. I'm all for waiting for intel to yeet itself into hopefully better cpu's in the near future, but for now, is this a sufficient upgrade, if I am only paying around 150$ for this entire upgrade? Also wouldn't be entirely opposed to AMD, but apex thrives on good per core performance, and as far as I know, Intel is still slightly ahead in that aspect.

Thanks in advance!

I agree with NightHawkRMX, as an upgrade is a nice one. And if you don't care or pay attention about whats going on in the gaming arena, it may be a good time to do it considering the used price of parts like the i7 7700k

The bad parts I see:

  1. You are buying a dead platform with only 1 more upgrade over that i7 9700K, and thats the i9 9900K, I can only imagine how much will people ask for that i9 CPU in a year or so.
  2. You are changing a 4 cores/8 threads cpu for a 8 cores/8 threads cpu, thats the same amount of threads, so don't expect future games+streaming to become a lot easier on your system.
Will it be faster?, no doubt about it.

About AMD and Intel single core performance, at 1440p resolution and with your current GPU the diference will be pretty close to nothing. And if AMD delivers what it shown with the new Ryzen 5000 series (hitting the market on november 5), it may turn the tables for the first time in years and put AMD on top of intel.

Now with that being said, is it worth it to go for a 9700k at this cheaper price, or really just wait, 8 cores is definitely more useful than 4 cores 8 threads, at least in my opinion. This still a good idea or should I wait until some larger changes.

9th gen and 10th gen are gonna become the old CPU gens here pretty soon, but they'll still hold you over until games (or any software really) actually require it.
I plan to wait oh, probably until 12th or 13th gen cpus to upgrade. I really don't see tech getting much better than where it's at with 10th and 9th gen, feel like we're gonna see a big plateau for the next few years.
I could be completely wrong of course.

The Core i7 9700K is a very powerfull CPU today and I believe it should be for the close future. How long? imposible to know, it will depend on the type of games and on the developers and how fast they can write games that may use more than 8 cores.

For 1440p 240Hz it should be an outstanding CPU.

And yes 8 cores is better than 4 cores + HT.

Hold up my friend. Firstly the 9900k 9900ks the 10700k and 9700k and 8700k all give about the same performance in gaming especially if you go 1440p. The 7700k is lacking in cores which is a dagger for streaming and multitasking and HT apps. The 9700 is 8 cores 8 threads. You will get a superior gaming experience compared to the 7700k along with your nice video card at 1440p with AA methods and graphics at high, however it is not very future proof lacking in threadsa and HT. If general desktop stuff and gaming is all you do grab the 9700k but you should find it for cheaper then what you stated; me thinking 250 dollars or so maybe 300 dollars to the door step at max. Your going to get the shaft tho in a couple years I guarantee you even if you do not use HT apps, games will eventually take advantage of HTing and you will as I said get the shaft. Consider paying 100 dollars more for a 9900k whose price has gone down over 150 dollars you can find one for 400 dollars easy. You want to pay almost 300 for a 9700k. So my advice is pay a little more grab the 9900k at 5Ghz all core with a hyper 212 or Dark Rock Pro 4 which is expensive and your set along with 32GB RAM and a SSD your good to go for a few years then all you have to upgrade is video card. Where as the 9700k route you will be stressing in a couple years to upgrade that so games can be happy using 16 threads. Pay 100 dollars more get the 9900k and play at 1440p with all AA methods turned on high quality and enjoy your 144fps and even drops on FPS the game will still fly smooth as pay-sync or free-sync will kick in and you will not notice a hitch just smooth as butter and what have you.✝🎗👶
