[SOLVED] Should I upgrade gpu or cpu

On my PC, I currently have a Ryzen 5 1400 and a Radeon rx 550. I was thinking about upgrading my computer, but I didn't know whether to upgrade my GPU or CPU.

For what main purpose? If looking at gaming experience then gpu with (possibly) a psu unless you go nvidia in which even a decent 450w psu is as much as you'll need. If looking more for production, sound design, web design etc then I'd bump that 1400 upto a 2600/X first.

If your looking to do a big upgrade then I would recommend both to avoid bottlenecking. However if you want medium tier hardware then start with your gpu if its for gaming. You'll need more then 300w psu though if you want to get a decent gfx card.

Psu. For sure. No matter what. $50 for a decent 450w - 550w psu will cover anything in your budget range, and unlike your current psu, won't be damaging expensive parts like the gpu. That psu says 300w, but chances are very good if pushed over 50% loads, there's going to be a decent fireworks show in the back of the pc.

For basic gaming, Sims, cs:go etc your cpu is good enough. If looking to get into battlefield series, Witcher 3, gta:v etc then you'll need a cpu with threads, that means an R5 1600 or better.

Would a 500 psu, Rx 580, and ryzen 2400G be good

Yes and no. For a Rx580, really should be looking at a decent quality 550w. The 2400G is a great APU, has the best internal graphics of any cpu. Which takes up half the space under the lid. With such a powerful gpu, a reciprocal cpu would work better, no real point adding a short-changed cpu, with good graphics to a good graphics card. A 2400G is $150, a R5 2600 is $170 and a far stronger cpu. The 500/580/2400G will work but that's a lot of money and a lower value.

for a cheaper alternative could I change the cpu to a ryzen 5 1600x and the gpu to a rx 570

Sure. The 1600x is not all that far behind a 2600x, less than 10% difference, putting it somewhat on par with a 2600.

The 570 lands in between a gtx1050ti and a gtx1060, so is fine for 1080p/60Hz for all but the most detailed AAA monster games.

Corsair TXM Gold (not the Bronze), Seasonic Focus/+, Corsair RMx, Evga 550w G2 are all good, and quite often on sale.

Your CPU is still quite powerful, I would suggest you to get a RX 580 which is best fit for your CPU. Also 300w PSU is too less for RX580 or any other GPU higher than RX550, thus also upgrade your PSU to 550W or 650W
