Should i upgrade my 6700k?

Currently im running 6700k oc 4.7hgz 24gb ddr4 hyperX 2133mhz oc 3000mhz mobo is z170 asus deluxe GPU is GTX 1080.
I usually game and watch youtube and sometimes run a vm or 2 and video edit.
im looking at a 2600x and a asus rog strix b450-f mobo my budget is around $500-$600.
but would it be worth the upgrade and would it improve my fps or would it just be a side grade?
if its just a side grade should i upgrade my gpu or look into sli?

no not really i just want to be able to hit my 144hz more often in more games

In terms of gaming performance, it would be a sidegrade at best and slight downgrade at worst depending on how GPU bound your games are and whether the game you are playing can scale across more than 8 threads. Video editing would see a boost with the additional cores and threads. Whether an approximate 30% boost in video editing performance is worth spending the money on a new motherboard and CPU is up to you.

Yeah, the only real gaming CPU upgrade for you right now would be to get an i7 8700k and overclock it to 5.0GHz or higher. Even then, the gains wouldn't be huge, especially if you are running resolutions higher than 1080p where the GTX 1080 will be the limiting factor for sure.

Yeah, the only real gaming CPU upgrade for you right now would be to get an i7 8700k and overclock it to 5.0GHz or higher. Even then, the gains wouldn't be huge, especially if you are running resolutions higher than 1080p where the GTX 1080 will be the limiting factor for sure.

Just be aware that SLI support is quite spotty these days, with relatively few games supporting it, and scaling isn't that great a lot of the time. On paper two 1080s should outperform a 1080Ti or RTX 2080, potentially offering performance close to an RTX 2080Ti. In practice, you may be lucky to even get GTX 1080Ti performance out of a 1080 SLI setup. Something to consider before you go out and buy another 1080.

i used to run 770s in sli it was pretty dodgy to say the least lol but ive looked up some sli benchmarks for the 1080 they seem pretty nice but as you said sli is pretty dodgy so i thinbk im gonna wait and see what comes out by the end of year.
