Been noticing my system isn't as good as it used to be.

I have a 5820k 32GB of ram 512GB Nvme ssd and a 980 ti.

I bought this system before so I could do a lot of vm work, but I don't mess with that as much anymore. So I'm thinking about getting one of the 4 core i7's instead with a new motherboard, and a getting a 980 ti. I've done a fresh install and that several times and I have an evga G3 psu so I doubt I have any power issues.

Just trying to figure out what I should upgrade to. Not really interested in trying to fix this one because I know it's just the hardware not able to give me anymore fps.

Solution
A 5820K is still an extremely good CPU, and considering what is going on with games now, will probably last you longer than even a 7700K would. This is because the 5820K is a 6-core chip, while the 7700k is a 4-core chip. Games are starting to use more cores, and we are on the edge of games requiring more than 4 cores, thanks to Ryzen.

I'd suggest sticking with your current CPU and investing as much as you can in the best graphics card you can afford. The 5820K is not the one that needs upgrading.

If you are still unsure, here's a way to see what needs upgrading:

While playing a game, check the GPU usage using something like MSI Afterburner. If the GPU usage is staying above 95% most of the time, you need a better GPU for better...

While playing a game, check the GPU usage using something like MSI Afterburner. If the GPU usage is staying above 95% most of the time, you need a better GPU for better performance. If the GPU is not being utilized fully, and the usage keeps dropping/stays below 95%, your CPU is bottlenecking the GPU, and need a faster CPU, like the 7700K.

Chances are your GPU is the limiting factor, since a 5820K is very good for gaming today, and it is the graphics card that needs frequent upgrading.

Going form a 5820k to a 7700k would be a sidegrade at best. Keep the 5820k it's a really good cpu still.
A gtx 980ti is till amongst the best gpu's currently on the market so unless you do 4k gaming at 60 fps no reason to upgrade.
