So I have Geforce GTX 1070 and would like to buy a 4K TV and game in 4K but I'm not sure if my graphics card will be able to handle it. So I was wondering if I should upgrade it from a GTX 1070 to a 1080.

Solution
If you want to play at 4k 60Hz, a 1080 Ti is the way to go. A 1070 will do okay but you'll be limited to lower settings, I would say not much higher than medium unless you don't mind playing at 30fps. A 1080 even has trouble playing many games on Ultra at 60Hz at 4k. So if you want the best 4k playing, a 1080 Ti is the way to go.

Can you return the 1070? That's a lot of money to be wasting if you cant, you really should have bought the 1080 in the first place if your goal was 4k gaming. A 1070 will do 4k in many games but it will require that you drop the settings by quite a bit in some games to achieve 60fps or close to it.

Do you want a 4k tv to use as a tv and monitor? If you plan to leave it hooked up top your pc I would not recommend a 4k HDTV, many have horribly bad response times and input lag. I would personally recommend a high refresh rate 1440p monitor for gaming over any 4k 60hz monitor or TV, pixels aren't everything and it will work well with your 1070. If your heart is set on 4k for some reason, I would look at a monitor with decent reviews over any tv if it's primary use is going to be for gaming.

Yeah that's a great point. If you want 4k you'll have to spend a bit to make sure you get a good one. Needs a decent response time, and good color accuracy, not all TV's will work well. I'm not big into 4k but simply because I prefer playing in 21:9 (changed my life!!!) The ultimate gaming monitor is a Predator X34 3440x1440 100Hz Ultrawide G-sync monitor. I'll take 3440x1440 over 4k any day!

And for that resolution there are VERY few games that a 1080 won't be able to handle, I just ordered a 1080 Ti today in fact for that reason (I want max settings on everything, BF1 is currently my only issue, can't play it at 1440 100Hz have to downscale to 1080 100Hz to get to 100fps on Ultra). But a 1080 will do fantastically at that resolution and refresh rate. If you wanted to save some money you can get a non-G-sync 3440x1440 60Hz monitor and your 1070 will do just fine for the most part.
