My pc isn't performing too well on a few games and I am considering upgrading. For example, I recently got Assassin's Creed Odyssey and even at low running it at 30-45 fps. Doom at low can drop to 45 fps in fights.

I have an r9 380x - which i am pretty sure is under performing for some reason, I have tried everything
i5-6500
2 x 8GB RAM
1080p 60Hz monitor

GTX 1070s are on offer right now, my budget is £400 or so (there are a couple below that price), and I was just wondering how long I will be able to use the card for before another upgrade (I understand this is very hard to answer) and whether it would be worth waiting for anything new. The RTX series came out a few months ago, they aren't really in my price range but should I wait for anything else, I don't know if anything is being released soon.

Solution
Odyssey is an extremely demanding game, I would expect a 380x to have to trouble with it. It is also very CPU intensive. At 1080p the 1070 should last you quite a while depending on what you expect in terms of performance and graphical settings, it is very hard to answer especially for someone other than myself. It will be able to run modern games for several years at least, how well I don't know. Your CPU may also become an issue in the foreseeable future, games like AC odyssey for example don't get the most out of higher end GPU's with only a 4 core 4 thread cpu, a 1070 may even be held back a bit in games like that at 1080p.

The RTX 2060 is releasing soon, should be within your budget. Though a 1070 may still be the better card...

Solution
1st look at these to see the problem:

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey PC system requirements

Minimum

OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit versions only)
CPU: AMD FX 6300 @ 3.8 GHz, Ryzen 3 – 1200, Intel Core i5-2400 @ 3.1 GH
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 285 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 (2GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0)
RAM: 8GB
Resolution: 720p
Targeted frame-rate: 30fps
Video Preset: Low

and

Recommended

OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit versions only)
CPU: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0 GHz, Ryzen 5 - 1400, Intel Core i7-3770 @ 3.5 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 (4GB VRAM or more with Shader Model 5.0)
RAM: 8GB
Resolution: 1080p
Targeted frame-rate: 30fps
Video Preset: High

the card u have atm is a bit faster than the one for 720 min req. (not by much)

and the one for the 1080p is over 20% faster than yours.

so the gpu is the issue for sure.

the 1070 is a great card. especially for 1080p gaming.
it would likely last you many years (tbh it'll prolly die before its outdated at 1080p gaming)

if you are not in a rush you "could" hold off until they formally announce the rtx 2060 and the gtx 1160. (they are supposedly gonna be around the 400~ range) but if you dont want to wait then go ahead and get the 1070 as it fits your req.

I understand it is a CPU intensive game, my friend upgraded from my cpu to a i7 7700k and that added a good 25fps to his average in Odyssey. The only reason why I am not sure to wait for the RTX 2060 is because this deal has popped up:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zotac-NVIDIA-GeForce-1070-Graphics/dp/B01LLAJ8PU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1546608203&sr=8-3&keywords=gtx%2B1070&th=1

I know this is a mini version but from the looks of it all this means is that it doesn't have as good cooling as other full sized cards. This will only really become an issue if overclocking since it would limit you, but since I am not planning on overclocking does it really matter?
