Should I upgrade my GTX 1060 6GB to a GTX 1080 after only 3 months?

I spent about $2200 CAD on a custom computer build recently but I was extremely cheap when purchasing the graphics card which I regret. My GTX 1060 6GB cost about $390 CAD when a GTX 1080 could have been purchased for about $800 CAD.

Since I was recently employed, I was wondering if I should upgrade my current graphics card within the next two months or wait potentially over a year for the next generation NVIDIA GPUs to come out.

Here is my system build:

If you care about running the latest AAA games with all the eye candy on then I can assure you a 1080gtx is not overkill, especially when it comes to playing games that are not very well optimized for PC.

As an example I played through assassins creed syndicate with my 1080gtx at 1080p on ultra and sometimes I'd dip below 60 fps. Any extra fps over 60 you'll be able to take advantage of because of your refresh rate on your monitor and it'll add extra smoothness to your game. If you had a 60hz monitor it would definitely not be worth it.

I actually started out with the 1060, took it back and got a 1080, so I was in the same boat as you.
honestly.. it's not about the parts that are in your PC, but if you are happy with what is on your screen.

but in a few months there are new nVidia GPUs coming out. So if you are happy at the moment iwth your 1060, you might get something better for your money a little later

1. 1060 6gb can not handle AAA games at very high-ultra for 100+ FPS...
2. 1080 will be overkill for your monitor
What games do you play? If csgo, overwatch, etc., no rush for upgrading GPU. If AAA titles but don't want to upgrade monitor any time soon, buy a 1070 and sell your 1060 6gb for good price and call it a day :)

You assume they are coming out in a few month. There is absolutely very little information. With the failure of Vega they have no reason to release anything great right now. Nvidia plays like intel only release ground breaking stuff when competition could hurt them. Research and Development aren't cheap.

When I use the optimize settings, I can run Battlefront 2 at ultra graphics at over 60-100 FPS, and my monitor doesn't need an upgrade, in fact, a 1060 6GB is underkill for a 1 ms response time and 144 Hz refresh rate gaming monitor.

I think I should wait for the new cards but I am not sure because I hear that if you wait for the new stuff, then you will never upgrade..

For a 144hz monitor, I would have recommended a GTX 1070. One of the issues with 144hz, is that there are a lot of games which simply will not allow you to get over 100 FPS consistently, even on the lowest settings. High FPS gaming is limited by your CPU, unless you turn all the settings up, and with a GTX 1080, you will reach a point where many games are going to be limited by your CPU (no matter how fast of a CPU you have).

Before making a decision, go play one of those games you wish you had better FPS, and turn the graphical settings down. If you do not see a notable increase, then moving to a GTX 1080 won't help you much.

The monitor is not the issue, I can play games like Battlefront II and Assassins Creed Origins on ultra graphics with consistent 60-100 FPS but the problem is if I increase the resolution past 100%, the performance will start to decrease.

Is the visual increase worth much from super scaling your resolution (down sampling is probably a better description)? Once you start talking about scaling beyond your resolution, no GPU is ever fast enough if you keep pushing that number up, but the visual increase isn't much.

Scaling beyond your resolution is generally only done because you have more GPU power than you can use. It shouldn't be the base line for your GPU needs.

Why are you wanting to buy another 1080p monitor? Nothing I have said has anything to do with your monitor, other than the resolution determines your needs. Getting another monitor with the same resolution doesn't change anything.

I second this.

Bystander, I meant a monitor best suited for a GTX 1080, I never said anything about it being 1080p, especially why would I want that if mine is already 24", 1ms, and 144Hz.

Jared how long did you wait until you took yours back? Right now it's too late for me to take mine back and the most I could maybe sell my current card for is maybe around $290 CAD if I get someone interested enough which is $100 CAD less than what I purchased it for about 2-3 months ago.

I exchanged mine within 15 days man.
