I'm currently using a 2011 Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-2434G75Mibb 15.6" notebook. It has Intel Core i5-2430m with 8GB memory and Nvidia Geforce GT 540m graphics adapter. The notebook is still doing fine, but occasionally I experienced shut-downs because CPU temperature hit above 92 degrees celsius. The internal battery is also dead, only lasts about 35mins.
Should I dump this 3 year old notebook and go buy the newest Intel Core i5-4210U with Geforce 840m? Intel Core i7-4510U notebooks are above my budget. I searched websites for CPU comparison and it seems the old i5-2430m is comparable to the new i5-4210U, albeit hotter. The new GT 750m or Geforce 840m are definitely faster than my old GT 540m graphics. And newer notebooks are cooler and battery lasts longer overall.
But if I only get marginal CPU performance from i5-4210U over i5-2430m, should I still upgrade to a new notebook?
I use Microsoft Office 2013 for work, and play games occasionally like Sims 3, Battlefield 3, League of Legends, Civilization V. I have to play games on a flat table because if I placed my notebook on the bed or on a cushion chair, it will shut-down due to over-heat. The fact that I have to plug in power all the time is the reason I was hunting for new notebook.
My budget is US$800. At this price, the market has Core i5-4210U with Geforce 840m (slightly less powerful than GT 750m), 4GB memory, 500GB hybrid or 1TB 5400RPM harddisk, and Windows 8.1 without touch-screen.
The last time I upgraded my notebook was from Dell Inspiron 6400 bought in 2006, to the Acer TimelineX bought in 2011. Going at this rate, maybe I should change my notebook in 2016.
