Hey there,

Short answer, yes, for better performance, you can get in budget there.

Something like this:

Would be a solid upgrade over what you have. Keep your GPU/SSD's, HDD's...

Well under your budget. Im not sure what PSU you have but you may want to upgrade it if its on the old side or of a lower quality.

Would be a solid upgrade over what you have. Keep your GPU/SSD's, HDD's and you are good to go for 1080p high hz/fps gaming, or 1440p high settings/60hz

Nice one @richiestang_78 , you literally posted that 5 seconds before I did. Remarkable how close they are.

for editing the ryzen is better but for gaming the i7 4790 k is stronger.

The issue is that newer games are increasingly taking advantage or more cores so you have to be careful not to generalize all of gaming. Would games that are more CPU reliant like CSGO do better with a 4790 over a 2600 yeah probably.

However the Ryzen 3rd generation which unless you are on a strict budget is a phenomenal entry level gaming CPU will run circle around the 4790 in every task and game. Same goes with the rest of the 3rd series line of Ryzens.

The only reason I would never recommend an older Intel is simply because people over value old hardware. Just cause you paid 400 dollars for a CPU a few years ago doesnt mean you will get anything close to that. I have a 7700K I plan on upgrading out of and I know if I get between 80-100 USD I would be lucky.

Totally agree with you. Admittedly @j121 , in some games, yes, the 4790k will perform better. And by better I mean purely FPS. Not game experience. As @richiestang_78 mentioned, it's too much of a generalisation. At 1080p you could make your argument, up that to 1440p + and it's a different story. More AAA games are taking advantage of cores and threads. And whilst the 4c/8t 4790k is still relative for sure, it's lost it's luster a bit now.

I'd go a little further on Ryzen 3rd gen (aka Ryzen 5 3600) and for IPC and gaming performance leaves the 4790k in the dust, along with Intel's 9th/10th gen CPU's.

It's not like it was for Intel anymore.

yeah but the i7 still got 4 core 8 threads . 8 threads still is alot better than just four cores.
of course getting a new third gen ryzen would be the best option for the future im just saying its still a good cpu.

Hello, im getting 150-300fps (average around 250) in csgo with i7-875k and 980ti. I used to have gtx 780ti before this and going from 780ti to 980ti gave me literally zero fps boost.

There might be something else wrong since your specs are way better with alot lower fps. Im playing on 1920x1080 which is actually higher what competitive players use in csgo.

And you will not get any significant gains for having more than 4 cores and 8 threads. Csgo is one of those games where people TURN OFF hyperthreading to get more fps. This all depends are you only thinking about this game and other fps like overwatch which dont utilize more than 8 cores/threads well. Or do you want to play games like apex legends which use more cores than 8?
