Hi, newbie here, but LONG time reader =D. I've been using an old am2+ giga board (specs below) with an unlocked and oc'd amd sempron 145 @3.4ghz (its read as an athlon x2 e4450 dual core) an hd4670 gpu and 2gigs ddr2800 mem. I use this only as a gaming rig to play wow and skyrim but usually on med settings with mediocre fps, I'd like to go for high(not ultimate) vid settings @1650x1050.
My roomate's bf said my board, cpu and more mem is holding me back; vid card is decent. He also noticed that some capacitor's and some other stuff (i guess non essential) on my mobo has popped or burnt out, and its on its last legs.
I have a budget of 250-300 bucks and I'm having trouble picking a cpu and mobo that goes w/my vid card and whether i should go ddr3. Or should i save money, get something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157226 which would let me keep some mem and the board is cheap, but I see everyone is going am3 socket and ddr3.
I love i can oc my cpu stable @3.4ghz on air cooling, but would it be better to get an Intel g630/g840, a solid asus board for ~100$, add 8gigs cheap mem and keep my old vid card? From what I've been reading on THard's articles this would be perfect for playing most anything on ultimate vid settings. (Btw can you OC these Intel chips? I tried looking it up)
Or would it be better to get a athlon x3 or phenom II x4, decent am3 board, 8gig mem same card and with overclocking it'd be better than the intel route for the future? And I'm guessing with both these specs ddr3 is the way to go. Edit: plan on using win7 64 bit this setup.

cpu unlocked and oc'ed to 3.4ghz stable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103888
mem: 4gigs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034
gpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102854
Thanks so much, I know I'm a little lacking in the knowhow but I'm tried to read as much as I could before posting.
