Should I upgrade my motherboard with my CPU or just the motherboard?

So my motherboard is a cheap gigabyte motherboard I bought when I built my pc a few years ago now, it's showing it's age and a few things are going wrong as well as it being a ***** to overclock the CPU. So I'm in need of a motherboard upgrade. However, my CPU is an i5 2500k (so socket 1155) and most of the good looking motherboards are for socket 1150. Is it even worth upgrading my cpu to a 4690k? I don't have the money to shell out for an i7 and I don't want one as it's not really worth the money when I just game. If you think I should just upgrade the motherboard then could you recommend one for my 2500k?

EDIT: I would quite like to start overclocking my cpu so a good motherboard recommendation for this would be greatly appreciated.

Build:
Mobo: gigabyte ga-pa65-ud3-b3 (now becoming faulty)
CPU: Intel I5 2500K
GPU: Palet gtx 770

Thank You.

i recomend this motherboard:http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Z97-A-DDR3-2600-Motherboards/dp/B00K2MAU5Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420645731&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+z97
and this CPU: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4670K-Quad-Core-Desktop-Processor/dp/B00CO8TBOW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420645758&sr=8-1&keywords=i54670k if you can you should also try to put a cooler in there like this one:http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-RR-212E-20PK-R2/dp/B005O65JXI/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_img_y The i54670k is a great overclocker and has the new lga 1150 technology and its great if you put a cooler in there wich will help you overclock more :)

That's a tough one, I don't think you'll get *that much* benefit going to a 4690k from a 2500k to be honest. So your cheapest option is just pick up another socket 1155 board and keep the 2500k for a bit longer. The problem if going to a socket 1155 board also is that I'm 99% sure Intel will change socket *again* pretty soon. So if you don't really *need* the extra power now, kinda seems like a waste.

As for boards, I don't have any specific recommendation other than I personally always have good experiences with Asus kit, I'm not that keen on Gigabyte stuff to be honest they tend to fail more often although I could have been unlucky.

If it were me, I would just get a new motherboard and keep the current i5. As it stands, it looks like your GPU would be your bottleneck, not the processor. So even if you upgraded, you would not see much of a performance increase.

Hi, thanks for the response. I currently have this cooler: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Seidon-120V-RL-S12V-24PK-R1/dp/B00FFCB0BG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420646079&sr=8-1&keywords=cooler+master+liquid+cooler

Would this be good enough to overclock? Does the socket make a much of a difference to performance as I noticed the 4670k isn't much of an upgrade to the 2500k. Will it make a noticeable difference?

The problem here is that I can't find a single decent 1155 socket motherboard ANYWHERE!

Hey ,
there's already a solved topic and you can check it out .

It all depends on your needs http://www.ukgamingcomputers.co.uk/difference-between-h67-p67-z68-and-h61-chipsets-a-22.html.
Upgrading to an 4690k with intel adding new sockets and new generation is a good option so just stick with you 2500k , do a little oc and you're good to go.

Would be great if I could find somewhere to buy these motherboards new 😛

Doubt you'll find a "decent" (not sure which features you specifically want on your mobo as you didn't mention them) 1155 socket motherboard as it's a rather "outdated" socket. I would just keep using it till it actually dies or till you get the money for a 1150 socket motherboard + i5 (4440, 4670(K) or 4690(K)) processor. That i5 2500k is still a decent cpu. Maybe AMD is something to look at?

Where do you live ?
Why does it have to be new ?

The issue with the AMD route is it's a side step from a 2500k (no advantage really). If your going to spend that much on new kit you may as well just go for it and get a 4690k.

Personally I'd look to see what the best socket 1155 board I can get is and go with that. I saw Ebuyer have quite a few mid range boards, even those should overclock fairly well. Also don't automatically dismiss some of the 'cheaper' brands. I've had very good experiences with both MSI and ASRock.

The socket is still well supported for AMD compared to the 1155. And the Asus mobo was the one with the most upvotes on ppp. MSI and Asrock are also both great brands, but still depending on the features the OP wants he should select the mobo.
