There really isn't any CPU powerful enough for any gaming for am2 board.
I would suggest selling the PC and buying a newer one with a 4 core.

Is it true that I can fit a am3 chip in a am2 motherboard

As for AM3 compatibility: Yes and no. It depends on the quality and TDP rating of your motherboard. Still, no am3 CPU is worth upgrading to since they don't support the latest instructions required for games like pubg or apex legends to even open. You may just get an error.

AM3 cpus will work in AM3+ boards, but not vice versa. AM3 CPUs may work in AM2 boards, but not vice versa.

Still, just scrap the system because nothing in AM3 is going to run many popular games thanks to instruction issues, if it even works in your board.

I would buy this for about $110 and throw a used video card in it:

Core I5 2400 Quad Core @3.1ghz
8gb DDR3
500GB HDD
Also importantly it has a big enough case to add a gpu like a GTX 750ti or 1050. Cards that don't need any power connectors.

You could spend more on this, but you will need a hdd and gpu: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optip...sh=item592d88f8c9:g:LksAAOSwufNdC9D~&LH_BIN=1

If you really want to build a gaming PC from scratch, it is possible within your budget.

This is $17 over budget, but you can sell the old PC for $25 or something.
The Ryzen 3 2200g is a pretty powerful CPU. It comes with a decent cooler and integrated Vega 8 graphics that can run games like fortnite smoothly at 1080p with lower settings.
