I just got a rx 6800 xt recently to pair up with my ryzen 5 3600 at 1440p. I mostly keep competitive fps games capped at 144fps. So is it worth it upgrade to like a ryzen 7 5800x3d for 1440p gaming or just wait till next generation?

It would be hard to beat in terms of cost vs benefit to keep your existing components and just replace the CPU. I am in a similar position myself thinking about the same upgrade.
Have you seen this article? It should answer some questions regarding this:

not really much of a difference here even in 1440p, ig there's no point to upgrade the 3600 yet. I think i'll just wait for a whole system rebuild then lol.

Well i got a damn good pull from the silicon lotto... But it really depends on the games you play.. I have 3 systems here.... a R7 5800x with a RX 6700xt, and I have a R5 3600 with a RX 6600XT. and my most recent build (for some reason i gave those to my young children.) that I am typing this from is a Athlon 3000g and a RX 6600 non xt.. don't have that card in it yet though... it's on a test bench and I'm powering it with a small 220W Power supply i took out of a 2010s acer POS.

I've used the 6700 xt the 6600 xt and the 6600 non xt with the Ryzen 3600. most everything at 1080p... not an incredible difference at that RES... but after reading that article and reviewing what i OC the 3600 too. It's even Less noticeable. At 1080p teaming the Ryzen 3600 with the 6700xt and 32Gb of ram OCed to 3800 (didn't really try as it was ram borrowed from the 5800x build) Wasen a huge difference than the 5800x with some of the PBO and Vcore settings changed to get it boosting higher and longer.... Sure at 1440p you may notice the bottleneck at the CPU in very CPU intense games. .. But i just went through the same thing.. Was gonna grab a 5600x or a 5800x.. But the OC on my 3600 has it running at 5600X speeds. VERY close scores on cinebench. So i decided to dust off the Athlon, tear some old PCs apart for parts. And wait till the new year and get a new board, CPU, and Ram.

If you have any further questions im more than happy to reply. My 3600 runs at 4350mhs and 1.3ish Vcore... Hell that rig with the 6600XT on a MSI b550m a pro. and it still runs Stable diffusion and some other AI locally. with the 6700xt its twice as fast due to VRAM.. would love to try a 6800xt on it. anyway, Im ethier waiting for 8000s to come out... or gonna round up the Parts to make an older 2 CPU operton system. 20 cores. 8 ram slots, and multiple GPUs
