Build Advice Should I upgrade my setup (AM4) or go with 13th gen?

Hi! I've being using a 2700X + Vega 56 + 16 GB 3200Mhz build for the last 5 years and I'm considering an upgrade :)

Use? Gaming. I mostly play "competitive" games in 1080p 144hz monitor but I eventually may change to 1440p monitor (not right now), also I casually play some AAA games (RDR2, etc) on high settings (I really don't max settings)

Here's the thing. As I've a AM4 gen setup, I could upgrade some parts of it... But, is it worth? Let me explain:

Upgrade costs ~$1752
  • CPU: 5800x3d (need to flash bios of my x470 mobo) [~$545]
  • GPU: RTX 4070 [~$1027]
  • PSU: 750W Plus Gold (I'm using a 650W Plus Bronze)
  • Cooler: AK620 (currently I've the stock wraith prism air cooler)
New PC costs ~$2165
  • CPU: i5 13600KF [~$406]
  • GPU: RTX 4070 [~$1027]
  • Mobo: Gigabyte Z790 UD AC [~$349]
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR5 5600Mhz [~$100]
  • PSU: 750W Plus Gold (I'm using a 650W Plus Bronze)
  • Cooler: AK620 (currently I've the stock wraith prism air cooler)
  • Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow
The difference is ~$413 between both options but looking at my country secondary market I think I could sell my current setup for at least that difference

To me it's reasonable to go with the new PC:
  1. For similar price, I'll be on a "new gen" (though it'll be "outdated" in next few months on 14th gen release)
  2. More "future proof" as it'll be using DDR5 and some leaks are saying that LGA1700 will support 14th gen
  3. Based on some CPU benchmarks there isn't a great performance difference between both build
  4. I'll be comfortable for the next 3/4 years at 1080p and probably 1440p
What do you think? Am I missing something?

Intel generally only supports a socket for 2-3 generations, and the 14th gen processors are basically looking like 13th gen 2, electric boogaloo.

AMD promised support for socket AM5 at least until 2025. Which hopefully it'll actually be a better implementation than how they did it with AM4.

In any case, given how old the system is, if you can afford to do so, go for something newer.

Isn't really a AM5 alternative for i5 13600k, right? I think it's right between 7600x and 7700x (based on some benchmarks). What do you think? Should I aim for an AM5 over 13th gen?

the 5800X3D wont be outdated for 3 more years. I would say go for option 1.

which 750W psu are you considering? try to get tier A from this list:

I would suggest the 7800XT for 2k gaming. the 12gb Vram will be a limitation in a year or 2. with FSR 3 coming up, i see no reason to go for the 4070 unless ray tracing is everything for you.

I went with the AM5 and the 6950xt. It's a really strong 1440p setup and the 16g ram on the 6950 is going to last a while. AM5 gives me exiting opportunities going forward the next few years.
