So im trying to help upgrade my dad's PC as it is quite old now and getting very slow, i've done the obvious process to help speed things up a bit but i still think it is in need of a few newer parts.
Current specs -
Mobo - Asus V7-P7H55E
CPU - intel i5 650
RAM - Kingston DDR3 4GB

The mobo has got a LGA1156 socket type and im struggling to find any cheap cpu's with that socket type, have they been fased out? so i'm wondering whether its going to be easier to upgrade the cpu or look for a new mobo with a current gen cpu?

My second question is about the ram, i was going to add an extra 4GB to help. its got 4 DIMM slots for up to 16GB of DDR3 ram 1333mhz, if i were going to add ram can i buy a single 8GB stick or should i get 2x4GB in order to make use of dual channel memory?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

some of those boards require double-sided ram sticks. they wont work with single-sided memory sticks. check with the manufacturer to be safe.

I've had a H55 mobo and upgraded the cpu to Xeon X3440 cpu for pretty good results. they sell for about $20-50 on ebay

As for the memory sticks, definitely get 2x4GB to take advantage of dual channel memory. it makes a big difference.

I would do this

1. upgrade memory to 2x 4GB
2. upgrade cpu to Xeon X3440 or X3480 if you want the best
3. add an SSD
4. add a graphics card , namely 1050 Ti (no bottleneck by H55 X3440/X3480)

then not only can he surf the web, he can also play some PUBG with you
