[SOLVED] should i upgrade to a 2700/x or a i7 4790k???

I have a i5 4570 paired with a GTX 1070ti, almost all of my games run 60fps @ 1080p max/high no sweat .. but some recentish AAA titles like AC odyssey, RDR2 are dropping frames on cities as the CPU is being maxed out...

i was planning to upgrade to either a haswell i7 that nearly costs as much as a r7 2700x + board + RAM... am a bit worried if it is worth spending on a dead platform or should i go with a 2700/x or such CPUs..

my current rig:

8GB Zotac 1070ti
8GB DDR3
i5 4570
SSD, HDD
550w 80+ psu


I am looking at a A320, 2700/x, 16GB DDR4 @ 3000mhz for 150% price of an used i7 4790k(300$),


I mainly use my rig for NetFlix, Gaming and a bit of editing

It only makes sense ot upgrade to an i5 4690K if you didn't already have a 4 core CPU. you also can't take full advantage of it without a Z series motherboard. The Ryzen 7 2700/X makes far more sense, but only if you get at minimum a B450 motherboard.

What is your current motherboard with your i5 4570? An i7 4790K still only makes sense if you can get the CPU cheaper than a ryzen 3 3300X or Ryzen 5 2600 at $120. You can run a ryzen 7 2700X on an A320 motherboard, but you might run into issues in the future with overheating if your case doesn't have sufficient airflow to cool the VRMs. You are better off spending a bit more for a B450 or when it releases, a B550 motherboard.

You can run a ryzen 7 2700X on an A320 motherboard, but you might run into issues in the future with overheating if your case doesn't have sufficient airflow to cool the VRMs. You are better off spending a bit more for a B450 or when it releases, a B550 motherboard.

My current mobo is MSI H81M-P33, it doesn't OC well ...

Looking at the prices on used 4770/4790 of every type, it looks like it's $85-120. Your motherboard can't overclock unless using the baseclock, so other than boost speed, a K series doesn't make sense to buy for $20-30 more. If you were just looking to extend the life of your current system, it's not a great price when you consider the R5 2600 at $120 is only a bit behind a 4790K and has 2c/4t more. You would obviously have to pay more for a completely new platform, but if you were going to upgrade, you would want a Ryzen 5 3600/X as your minimum baseline upgrade. The Ryzen 3 3300X is a really good CPU, but having fewer cores and threads than that R5 3600 could cripple performance of future games, assuming you keep the system for more than 3 years.

So it basically comes down to spending around $100 for an i7 for your current system, which will also probably require a new CPU cooler for another $30-40 or spending around $350-450 for a Ryzen 5 2600/3600, B450/550 motherboard, 16GB ram and a new PSU (you probably need a new one.)

i traded in the i5 and got a deal for the 4790k for less than 80$, RDR2 Odyssey now run like butter on my rig ..
