The 280x crossfire will be faster than a single 970, do you currently have issues with vsync? Your new monitor is going to be running at 144Hz so unless you plan on running most of your games at a higher frame rate than that at 1440p you probably won't be needing to use vsync/gsync. If it was me I would save my money and stick with what you have.

It all comes down to whether you want to save money or not.
