Thinking about upgrading to a skylake i7 660k from my i5 4690k or should i stick to haswell and save some money by buying a i7 4790k and avoid buying a new motherboard and DDR4 ram?

Solution
the 4790k won't be much faster than the 4690k, neither will the Skylakes. you're looking at...4-8% increase tops
upgrading is not really worth it either way unless you require hyperthreading for some applications

I agree with Isokolon, it's not really worth the upgrade unless you want/need the hyperthreading. You will have a hard time finding much of a difference in gaming.

If you do want/need the hyperthreading, then you are better off going to a 4790k. It's not worth the extra expense of motherboard and RAM coming from Broadwell.

If you need the hyperthreading, then the 4790k is the best option, as the 6700k really isn't much faster and the only other big advantages Skylake offers are DDR4 RAM support and better support for high speed SSDs with faster M.2 and NVMe support. If what you do needs a lot more cores and threads eg. more than 4 cores and 8 threads, moving to the X99 platform an something like the 6 core/12 thread i7 6800k might be a more worthwhile option.
