what can i do with this system to improve performance with what i have? or should i just get new system?

I'd vote for just getting a new system. You could try upgrading, but you'd probably end up replacing almost everything in the system just to upgrade.

I agree, While you could possibly keep your mobo and upgrade to an XP2800+ or 3000+, you'd have to replace the ram too, a new mobo is under $100 and you get much much better performance and possible future upgradeability. If your old HDD is large enough, you could maybe keep that.

You can't use an XP Barton on a 939 mobo. Get the Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester (or similar speed - be sure it's the 939 socket - there are now 3 sockets for AMD chips and 939 is newest/best). And remember - AMD's speed ratings are confusing - they compare to different models of P4 - Roughly, XP #s compare to P4A/B, 64 #s compare to P4C/E, Sempron to Celeron D - so a 64 3200+ is significantly faster than an XP 3200+ (an XP3200+ is about the speed of a 64 2800+ - roughly).

The nForce3 250 is a better chipset than a VIA K8T800 chipset, so I'd recommend a board based on the nForce3 250.

I have a 9600XT and I like it a lot, but you can get a 9800Pro for about 200 (less usually) and its much faster. Be careful on the 9800pro though, be sure you get one with a 256bit memory interface (128meg of ram is fine though) - the 128bit ones can sneak up on you (because they're cheaper) and slow you down drastically.

For DVD burners Nec 3500A is highly recommended, but there are others that are good as well. A quality 420w should be plenty.

I believe that you've got a mobo socket / CPU socket mismatch there, but something like that, yes.

Sounds like a nice system. Wish I had money for one like that.

Now for another wrench...

New Graphics interface called PCI-Express (PCIe). AMD mobos for it should be out soon, reportedly late this month. (nForce4 and K8T890 chipsets) As far as performance, it's got 2x or 4x the potential as AGP, but since AGP isn't fully utilized as is (AGP8x isn't any faster than AGP4x in real-world use), PCIe doesn't do anything for you today. Tomorrow it probably will - but it may be a while.

If you wait a little, you can get one of them, and possibly be able to upgrade your video in a year or so. Its still socket 939, but AGP is going by the wayside, there will probably come a time where you can't get a new AGP card. nVidia GF6600 is around 200 and roughly the same performance (bit better here, bit less there) as a 9800pro. 9800pro isn't available in PCIe, and 6600 isn't in AGP (yet).

In my opinion, the decision should be based on: Will you be upgrading a little here, a little there over the next year or so, or will you keep the system as is for a couple years? If you upgrade a piece here & there, then wait for the PCIe, if not, it doesn't matter - buy when you're ready.

I'm not sure why people push the 3200+ Windchester. The 3000+ OC's just as well and is much cheaper. I bought <A HREF="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80699-2" target="_new">this one</A> from Zipzoom. $180 shipped for a retail box with fan.

same as ever i would like to keep system for max 3 years,

previously i had a system that got fried by 350 watt atx which i got from 3 years ago most got fried -AMD 2100 cpu an abit mobo i think it was 266 VIA chipset, 3 hardrives fried.


im just trying to replace the slowest one i have atm.

Have you considered selling that system?

I mention this because if you decide to upgrade almost everything, but keep a few parts from the old one, you won't have much of a market to sell it.

Selling your old system could help you to recover the cost of the new one. A system like yours would sell bare (no monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, or printer) for a bit over $200 on my local market.
