Hi All,
I just bought a Dell latitude 1555 second hand. I got this laptop quite cheap and even if it's 10 years old it runs blazingly fast. Though there is bit heating near left side of keypad down below. The seller says he has replaces some IC last year as it used to heat and shut down. Hope I don't face this issue.

Anyways, the user had installed Windows 7 ultimate which is in unactivated. Since there is no support for Windows 7- and its in unactivated version ,Should I install Windows 10 over it ? I mean it runs quite fast I spite of old cup and on 4GB RAM. Will it perform similar on 10?

If upgrading how do I do it like I have a HP laptop with me which came with win 8.1 and I later upgraded it to Win 10. Can I install that OS on this laptop ? Will it be an official install? Can two laptops share same Windows OS officially ?

Thanks

Solution
Yes, you could upgrade from Windows 7 unactivated to Windows 10.
You might need to perform a clean Windows 10 upgrade install... >>clean install steps<<
Windows 10 will run unactivated, until you get an activation code.

Are you sure is a Latitude 1555?
It's DELL studio 1555,
That's more like it, since i never heard of a Latitude 1555.

where will I get the activation code from like?
The DELL studio 1555 comes with a Windows 7 Home COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker.
You could used that code to activate Windows 10 after Windows 10 have been installed.
If the sticker with the COA is no longer there, then you might have to purchase q Windows 10 activation code.

How about performance on win 10 vs win 7?
I have upgrade the DELL Studio 1555 to Windows 10 Home 64-bit and it performed as good as Windows 7.
Pentium T4300 /4GB RAM /256 GB SSD
I installed Windows 10 from a USB Flash drive while disconnected from the internet.
When I got to the section to provide a activation key, I clicked on 'I don't have a product key'
After the installation and creating a local account, then I connected to the internet.

I have read about people not upgrading to 10 from 7. Is it advisable? Like security threats etc. Can I just install antivirus to counter them? Thing is I hate 10 and would not like to upgrade. I am a very basic user, web browsing, emaiing, youtube type. No gaming or video editing.

Do you gave heating issues as described above?

The unit was a little warmer than I would like, so I removed the heatsink applied thermal paste. Also I cleaned the fan and clean the dust.

Besides a good antivirus, one has to exercise common sense.
I know a lot of folks that still use Windows 7.
Just be prepared in case something breaks the OS and then you might not have a choice but to upgrade.

I personally tested everything, it was running very fine no issues.

Since the battery was running out I kept it on charge. Few hours later when I started it neither keyboard nor touchpad is responding. I used usb mouse and checked under device manager I could not find dell touchpad icon ,only 2 hdi compliant mouse and ps 2 mouse icon.

What's the issue here?
Thanks

Edit I have just removed battery and direct on charger, now the touchpad is working fine, but keyboard is still not working. Strange.

Edit 2 reinsertee the battery, again no response from touchpad. Keyboard as well.

Definitely seems driver issues because I went into bios , there functions and down up arrow keys are working.

I checked under battery, there is serial number but it's for windows Vista (or xp?) default OS version with which it was launched . Can I clean install windows 10 and activate using this key?
