I'm currently running low on space on my 1TB Firecuda 530 SSD M.2 GEN 4 thinking to expand my storage with another SSD M.2 card but having doubts if i should wait for gen 5 ssd or get 2TB gen 4 with current black friday deals.

Solution
So, one gen 4 ssd m.2 card and other one gen 5 ssd m.2 on a z690 Formula motherboard wouldn't make no difference? The gen 5 ssd performance would be capped by my motherboard or something like that?

That board has several M.2 ports, from PCIe 3.0 to 5.0.

They don't really interfere with each other.

But if you were copying a file between a 4.0 drive and 5.0 drive, you would only see the performance of the 4.0
Performance is dictated by the slowest device in the chain.

It would have the same performance as if it were between 2x 4.0 drives.

And you'd have to be a real benchmark freak to notice.
In real user facing practice, you'd never...

Unless you are doing direct copy between 2x PCIe 5.0 drives, on a known compatible motherboard....you'll see ZERO difference over a 4.0. Or even 3.0.

That's informative, thank you.

I'll be getting 4.0 then, throwing extra $ for 5.0 doesn't seem to be worth at all as of now, pairing 4.0 with another 4.0 is my best bet given the fact that there isn't proper stock/not even fully released 5.0 m.2 cards yet.

So installing another 4.0 ssd drive won't interfere with the main m.2 SSD? Like both will use their full potential with z690 Formula motherboard?
