Should I wait for the GTX 700 series

Hi everyone! I am currently using a (expensive) laptop to play games. Lately I haven't been able to play any games at native resolution, and experience random crashes. The computer is still a great everyday computer, and anyway...

I have the ability to build a new desktop computer (prospective specs)
i5 3570k
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
OCZ Vertex 4 128gb ssd
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3-1600
Corsair CX600 PSU
Corsair Vengeance C70 Case
EVGA GTX 660 FTW Sig 2
or
MSI GTX 660Ti OC Twin Frozr IV

would the 660 (evga) be able to play these games @60 frames?

I was wondering what people think. Should I wait for the GTX 700 series (maxwell) or should I go ahead and go with this? And if you think I should buy now, is the 660Ti worth the extra $80? I'm on a 1k - 1.1k budget, and am currently using a 1600 x 900 monitor. Will change to 1080p in the future, but not in the near future.

Hardly insufficient, but it will be slightly outdated. It will still perform quite well in new games but of course not as well as the 700 series cards. The difference in FPS is usually an average of 10 or so with max settings. If you're fine with tuning the settings down a bit, it's not going to ruin your game.

There's not really that much of a difference all in all. You can wait if you can or you can buy now if you want to.

YES.. btw 700 series wont be maxwell it will be kepler but i honestly dont think its worth getting 600 cards as of now knowing the 700s will be out in a few months. I have the 660ti but i still want a bit better card so im thinking 780 700 atleast. Just me tho btw the spoiler specs look good u should wait. Even tho if you dont like the 700s which i dont see why you wouldnt atleast u will know whats out

FYI haswells (new cpus from intel) will be out before the gtx700 series... so if you'll wait you'll better get one of those as the cpu, they'll use new socket and it wont be compatible with the current gen socket...

You may not know as nobody does at this point. Probably mid or late Q2 2013. I would personally build the rig now. Once the 700 series is launched you'll be stuck with a super expensive reference card for 3 months that nobody will want to buy once the aftermarket cooled cards are out.

I don't know that I would be able to afford a "new" Intel CPU, maybe I should do a build now :sweat:

they'll price them similarily with the current gen offerings, at least price/performance wise, even if the top end gets a bit more expensive. But when they do launch the older parts should get a liitle discount to clear the rest of the stock.

Thanks everyone, I'm picking this as the best response. (Although the expert game some AWESOME advice) To be honest, I am willing to turn all my games to low (except for like minecraft, LoL, or planetside (that games looks terrible on low)) Thank you for your complete honesty. As long as I can play games that come out this December with out any frame drops, I will be happy as can be.

Im guessing march april about the same timeline as 600 series. People saying q3 q4 which dont make sense..By that time the 760ti 760 750ti 750s will be out. Reason why i say wait is because if you go 600 series now and then see 700 series specs you going to hit your self in the head trying to sell that gpu and the value will decrease which is waste of time

Building now would be a safe bet. All the tech out right is fantastic and with no official release date for the 700 series, you could be waiting anywhere from 2-6 months or more, no one know much about the 700 series right besides being a Kepler revision of sorts. The 660Ti will do you well in BF3 and Planetside 2. Hope you enjoy your new rig! :)

I dont see 6 months. By that time 760ti is in that range i would say march april for higher end cards and lower end later down the year like 600 series

670 would better then the 660ti. Im not a fanboy or anything of nv just i heard ati has probs with framerate latency and driver issues. If they didnt have those 2 issues i would try them but as of now im sticking to what i know instead of guessing
