I was thinking if I could seek all of your advice on a predicament. I am thinking of getting a gaming laptop. Been thinking that for quite a while because I have to be going overseas soon for around 5 or 6 months for my exchange.

So, moving my current rig is not possible. So I went ahead to sell my macbook pro last week and wanted to go get myself a 970m notebook to do Overwatch, Battleborn and occasional Witcher 3.

Then I read about the new 1080m and probably 1070m that will be announced in June with a drastic leap in performance. The former even paring or exceeding a pc Titan X.

Do you think I should wait for the new graphics card or at least wait for the price drop?

I am so conflicted because I was just about to settle on an S14 from Aftershock. Right size and also PC Show promotion coming up.

Any advice will really go a long way to help.

I will probably need to get the laptop latest by the end of July before I fly overseas.

Thank you so much in advance.

I therefore assume you are from Singapore like me? :p I doubt that prices are going to drop that quickly judging by how expensive gaming laptops still are. Perhaps you can look at a couple of MSIs for the PC Show. Many outside stores are offering competive prices for mid-range laptops. I payed $899 SGD for a Dell Inspiron 14-3459 (with 12GB of RAM no less!). Sorry I can't help that much. By July, you should probably just buy something with a 970M.

Actually it wont be, its supposedly a rebadged chip, basically last gen with a few minor tweaks. Nvidia will rape amd's chips in the mobile market like they always do, but you wont see any 1070 or 1080m chips till march of 2017.

The m480 and m490 are going to use gddr5 and are not Polaris based I can assure you of that were looking at like 4% performance increase and evenot at that amd mobile graphics suck in comparison to nvidia. Hands down amd is only good in the desktop market.

I'm on the same boat. My laptop is pretty much dead and I'm in desperate need of a new one. Want the razer blade, but it seems like a stupid move considering how close the 1070M is. Even so, new laptops probably wont be out until september at least and my current one wont live until then.

There is no set release date for the 1070m and 1080m, regardless of what some others might say. It does seem likely, though, that they will come in the next few weeks.

There are a couple of reasons I think that. First of all look at the release dates of the last few generations of GTX cards. The mobile versions of the cards came out a couple of weeks after the desktop cards. The 970 and 980 came out September 18, 2014, and the 970m and 980m came out October 7, 2014. The 780 came out May 23, 2013, and the 770, 770m, and 780m all came out May 30, 2013. If Nvidia follows a similar release schedule, the mobile cards should be out in the next few weeks.

Secondly (this is not very conclusive evidence, but) there have been some rumors floating around that they will reveal the two mobile cards at Computex.

If I were you, I would at least wait until mid-late June.

But the other problem is, I don't know how long it takes for the manufacturers to start building computers with the new cards. But I have found some laptops on Amazon that were available just a couple of weeks after the 970m came out, so it seems like the laptops come out fairly soon after the cards come out.

From what I understand there is not going to be anymore M branding for the 1080 and 1070 you are going to get the full versions in laptops now.

If you're not a heavy gamer, I don't think you'll have to wait for Pascal, because you may not really need the extra features they're trying to promote. the current tech has been stable for a while in the market, which may give you more confidence on the consistency and quality.

I wish they would give us some news. I'm in the market for a laptop and I don't want to drop $1200+ on a 970/980m only to find out a week later Pascal laptops launch at the same price with a 20-30% increase. Such is the way of technology.

I feel the same say. I'm interested in the semi-new Asus ROG 502-vt, which has a 970m. While I know it's a great system, and I need a laptop soon for college (end of August) I don't know if I should wait until the last minute for a pascal laptop. Tough call. Anyone think I should spring on the 970m laptop for $1300?
