Should I wait to purchase a GTX 1080?

So big news--GTX 1080 is getting released on May 27, 18 days from now. My inquiry addresses whether or not I should wait to look into the graphics card to see if there is something fatally wrong with it, or if I should buy it right away

IMPORTANT: I am about to build my new computer and will be running on that. It currently has no graphics card (I literally just returned my GTX 980 T. The 1080 got announced as releasing two hours after I purchased it. I need to know if there is a possibility that the 1080 will sell out, resulting the time in which I am absent of a graphics card to spill into essentially my last summer of freedom. Thanks

I can assure you that The Witcher 3 isn't any more fun with hair works on.

If this really is your last summer of freedom, I'd pick up a gtx 970/980/980ti on the cheap on ebay and get straight to gaming.

There aren't even going to be that many AAA DX 12 games compared to AAA DX 11 games before 2017 rolls around.

Or you can spend the better part of at least a month from now fretting about every percentage point with the hardwares price/performance and not even spend your summer gaming.

So many PC gamers fall into the trap of looking up hardware info instead of gaming like they intended to in the first place. Myself included. PEACE!

edit: Also, just to counter a comment or two in this thread, a GTX 1080 would need to have at least 15...
The worst that could really happen would be Nvidia sorely overstating how powerful the 1080 is, and instead of something "twice as powerful as a GTX 980" you get something with performance along the lines of a 980 Ti. You'll also know how the card performs in the real world before it's on the market since Nvidia always sends a bunch of review samples to [strike]their advertisers[/strike] YouTube reviewers.

You've got a little bit of time to plan still. The embargo on benchmarks/reviews/etc will be lifted May 17 so that's when you can dig into big website/YouTuber reviews and find out just how the 1080 performs in the real world.

edit: Also, just to counter a comment or two in this thread, a GTX 1080 would need to have at least 15 TFLOPS of compute power to double a 980ti. Gtx 1080 is rocking only like 9 TFLOPS. Furthermore, a properly clocked custom 980ti beats a reference titan x because of the poor cooling of the blower.

Those expecting the GTX 1080 to show double the performance of a 980ti across the board ate going to be very disappointed and probably upset with Nvidia for grossly over exaggerating performance.

Nvidia wouldn't be able to move the next set of GPUs if this set was that good.
