Should my CPU only be at 53 degrees Celsius while using Prime95?

Title pretty much says it all, i've been running prime95 as a stability test for my cpu OC for the past half hour and the hottest my cpu has gotten was 55 degrees and then down to 53. This seems odd because i've played games where my cpu gets up to 58-60 degrees celsius. Is there settings in prime i need to change? Also, i've been testing with small FFTs.

Solution
53 seems about right, what CPU & motherboard are you using? If your room temperature was a lot higher than now, that could explain why it ran hotter while gaming, however... Small FFTs are very hard on your CPU and you won't (shouldn't) even get near the heat output from a stress test compared to gaming.
Depends what cpu you have, if an eight core cpu I would say 53 on prime is good, if the cpu is under a load of 99%.
If it bothers you about the temps then have a check if you know what cpu you have it`s thermal limit is before it halts execution.
these days your pretty safe when it comes to over clocking a cpu and how well protected it is by the mobo bios and temp monitoring feature of most mobo`s to prevent damage to your installed cpu.

The thermal throttle and shut down temps can be found in your bios and set in most cases.
60c to mid 60`s seems ok if you are just using a stock cooler that came with your cpu. if you want lower temps then your better off buying an after market cooler to bring the temps down about 10c or more.

Specs:
CPU: FX-8320
mobo: Gigabyte 970a-d3p

thephantom4567, download a program that lets you monitor your core speeds, just to make sure it doesn't throttle down from your OC to 1.4 GHz for a couple seconds, this means that your MOSFETS are overheating due to poor VRM cooling, but in a lot of cases having a fan spin right ontop of them helps for most people. We both want more info, what's your OC settings, everything you changed if possible (if you can remember) would be great to know!

Temps sound about right. My previous rig I had was fx 8370 oced to 4.8 and top temps were 56 on prime 95 on small ffts using corsair h105 to cool it. My current rig runs hotter that my fx. And they say amd runs hot......lol
