Should my friend pair his i5 6600k CPU with a Z270 Motherboard? or just go with Z170?

No sense in sticking with z170 chipset. The Z270 can run both the Skylake and Kaby Lake models.

Unless he has a specific need for something on the z270 Which really in not much the z170 is a much better value right now.

ya you could pair it with the z270 motherboard or the z170 motherboard though i would go for z170 due to price and value for money if i was getting a new skylake chip rather than kaby lake in the first place

No reason to spend 10 bucks for nothing unless you need a specific feature offered by the Z270.

1151 socket will be discontinued at the end of 2017 anyway. Keep your costs low.
