Should you purchase an HDR monitor in the upcoming months?

Hello,

I've just picked up the ASUS Swift PG279Q, and while I'm really impressed with it - I'm debating whether I should have waited for the HDR PG27UQ. But then comes the question of hardware; and quite honestly, I'm not sure if mine would be capable of running that monitor.

My specs
i5 6600K
16 GB 2138 MHz DDR4
GTX 1070

So what are your opinions? Is HDR a pipe-dream for most until GPUs catch up, or should I return the 279Q and wait on the 27UQ? If I can't run the 4k at smooth framerates, would lowering the native res to 2k be more optimal, and then at least my monitor is more-or-less future proof?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Thanks,
Evose

Even a 1080 Ti can't run all games at 60 FPS on a 4k display, let alone at 144 FPS. That is a display that won't be anywhere near fully utilized by just a single 1070.

Some other things to consider are many HDR displays have a problem with high input lag when HDR is enabled. It's also an IPS panel, and while they have been popular due to accurate colors, they do not have nearly high enough contrast ratio to fully benefit HDR.

This is why many are going to Sony HDTVs for 4K HDR. They are making great strides in low input lag HDR, and have some of the best processing and up-scaling engines of any display.

I see a lot of people jumping to say this ASUS 4k display is great for gaming, yet I don't see any reviews on it, let alone fully comprehensive ones that detail input lag and contrast ratio.

Thank you for the insights.

Input lag would heavily influence my decision; at CES they approached it as a gaming solution monitor for the next generation of displays. Don't quote me but they also mentioned the monitor was being powered by 10k in hardware, so that prices out many early adopters looking to replicate the results.

Still though, $800 for the pg279q is a hefty investment given how close we are to the technology shift.
