I have win 10 in my Acer Notebook. I want to create a partition in my only primary one by shrinking the volume in Disc Management. I get the proverbial message to wait as it access the info. I wait and wait and wait and nothing appears. I have also tried this on my desktop with a different system and I get almost immediate response, but not on my notebook.

  1. Why the Shrink?
  2. You DO have a known good full backup of the one and only drive, right?
Further, give us some details.
Dive type and size.
A screencap of the Disk Management window would help.
I was informed that if I want to partition my main and only drive, that i have to shrink the volume to see how much room i have in doing so. I want to create a partition there, cause i want to add important files totally 20 gigs. The response from the program is to see how much room i have in megabytes.

Screencap of your Disk Management window, please.

Partitions are a poor way to segregate data. Why not just another top level folder?

Shrink operation may perform drive defragmentation before shrinking. This depends on current level of drive fragmentation.
This can take a long time.

Wait until it finishes. Do not interrupt the process.
