Shuttle system PSU question.

Hi Guys, sorry you must get loads of theses posts. I'm building a new PC for the first time and have come up with the following:


Shuttle XPC SD37P2 Barebone System Socket 775 400W

NEC Optiarc AD-7170S-0B 18x DVD±RW/DL/RAM Serial ATA Black - OEM

Point Of View 8800GTS 320MB DVI HDCP PCI-E Graphics Card

Western Digital WD2500KS 250GB 7200RPM SATAII/300 16MB Cache Hard Drive - OEM

Kingston 4GB KIT (4X1GB) DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 CL5 Non Ecc 1.8V

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz) Socket 775 FSB1066 4MB Cache Retail


I've decided to go for a shuttle for portability but id like to play some games as well so I've put lots of RAM and a good graphics card in there. However, the shuttle only comes with a 400W PSU and I'm worried that might not be enough power for the graphics card. Has anyone got a similar set up that works?

I'm fairly new to the THG Forums (well ... long time reader) but i've got quite a bit of experience with shuttles. I'm currently running an SD32G5 which has the 250W power supply. Inside i've got an e6600 (overclocked) a 7950gt, 2gig of RAM and two sata hard drives. All of this easily falls within what the 250w supply can offer.

The 8800GTS you've listed should, at max load, use about 55W more power than my graphics card - and since your power supply is rated 150W higher, you shouldn't have any power problems as far as i can see.

Shuttle power supplies, are, in general a bit of a strange product - people from other forums have found them exceedingly stable even under very high load, and so the phrase "If it fits inside the case, the power supply should be enough for it" is thrown about quite a lot

If you do not overclock the system it`ll work fine.
