Sign of dud RAM?

After my previous post on updating an old laptops RAM from 4gb to 8gb, I was advised to find the same type (DDR3 PC3L), same brand and same timing (11-12-B2). However, on booting the lappy up I just get a black screen. I remove the new ram and it boots as normal. I swap in the new ram for the old (4gb for 4gb) and black screen. I assume this means the ram is knackered but is there a way to be sure before I send it back.

Thanks again

Download memtest, burn it to a cd or download the bootable usb version and then boot to that and leave it to run for an hour or until you get any errors, whichever comes sooner with the suspected faulty stick installed: http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

Cheers, whenever I place the new stick in, the laptop refuses to start so I dont know how I would get round that. Also even with the old working ram left in as soon as the new 'faulty' one is added the laptop refuses to boot.

Thanks again

Oh I see, I thought the laptop still posted, just wouldnt load Windows, in that case, if the stick is the same as the old one, but wont boot on its own or as a pair, id say it must be faulty.

Cheers again, just needed to confirm the suspicions, checked it in another laptop and again nothing.

Thanks again for your help and patience

Can anyone confirm if buying new PC3L ram with a different timing (currently 11-12-B2) would make any difference? I assume mixing would be a bad idea but would a complete swap make any difference to the laptop working?

Its a Toshiba Satellite C55 A 1GS
