Signs of a dead motherboard?

Hi everyone,

My ASUS A8N-SLI Premium 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard was recently diagnosed with having bad capacitors. I'm in the process of upgrading my computer, but I'm curious about what signs motherboards will give when they are dying. I've noticed for the last six months that my motherboard sometimes didn't beep once like it normally did when I opened my computer, but I still managed to load Windows. Is this a sign of a dying motherboard? Thank you in advance for your responses.

It can be crashing in windows, sometimes not posting at all.

the Capacitors thing is often a physical sign of failure before you start having the machine from crashing.

its not something that will stop or go away. it just gets worse to the point when it totally dies.

Who diagnosed it?

If you can always load Windows when you boot, in all likelihood, your motherboard is OK.

I disagree with this. bad caps are pretty easy to spot. and you can load windows but have it act screwy, like your beep. as the caps go bad it takes longer and.longer for them to charge up, but once there can be OK. I fixed my friends monitor last year, if you left it on it was fine, but if you turned it off the caps discharged and it would take 5.minutes (and eventually an hour as it got worse) to turn on, until they finally destroyed themselves. caps are funny little things and there are so many they can effect a wide variety of things but still allow a boot up. thing is on a motherboard most are the same, come from the same batch, same age, once one starts to go you're on barrowed time. you can of course replace them if you're any good with a soldering iron and attached to the board

haven't been able to load Windows lately. get a disk boot failure even though my hard drive checks out healthy
