Hello friends,

I am trying to build a super quiet rig and right now it appears that my HDD is the loudest component on my rig (also gets in the way a bit, as I am running a MITX build).

I need some storage, as I get the performance option from my vertex 3 already.

I am thinking WD green 2.5" 1.5TB, but the price is a bit shocking... I can get a crucial 240GB for the same price!

Please advise!

Many thanks,
John

If you are updating hard drives, do yourself a favor and get an SSD. Not only are they completely silent (because there are no moving parts), but the performance gains that you will get are phenomenal. You won't get the huge storage space, but they are sometimes 10 times as fast as a conventional HDD. Here is a good model that won't break the bank:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE250BW/dp/B00E3W1726/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1395155531&sr=8-2&keywords=Samsung+840

You can choose a larger size if you like. The 840 EVO comes in up to 1TB. They are fairly expensive, but the speed and quietness can't be compared to.

In regards to the WD Green-- I have a 2.5" 15mm height 2TB green I use externally and it is completely silent even when read/writing at full load (roughly 100MB/s)

I got lucky and got it for $100 new on eBay but I think they run like $175. The performance is really good for a green drive and like I said, it's completely silent. One option you can do if you do some research is, find an external 2.5" 1-2TB on sale that can be disassembled and used as an internal drive (they're usually cheaper than bare drives for some reason.) Unfortunately they've started replacing bare drives in a lot of the externals with hard drives that have proprietary boards that go directly to USB with no sata connector.

Good luck.

hey guys, I bought an icy dock for 2x 2.5 inch drivers and noticed it only holds 9mm or thinner drivers... thinking of getting a 1-2tb WD blue 2.5 inch drive... anyone know how noisy they are?

thanks
