Silverado Heat Problems

I just finished putting together my new system. The CPU is a 1.4ghz Thunderbird that I was planning to overclock. Because of this I went all out and bought a Noise Control Silverado for the ultimate combination of silence and cooling power. After everything was set up it booted and I went into BIOS to disable onboard audio. While there I checked out the PC Health section and much to my dismay it said my CPU was running at 62C. Isnt that way to hot for a 1.4ghz? I checked the heatsink and it seems to be on ok. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

yep - way to hot - what thermal compound are you using? Do you have the fans set on turbo? What is your system/mobo temperature? Is your cpu still set to 1.4G@1.75V?

Hi,

I have the same problem. I have a Athlon T-bird 1,33 GHz (not overclocked - yet)ASUS A7A277 (ALiMAGiK)and Silverado Noise Control working at 12 V (directly connected to the Motherboard and my CPU is 65 C degrees hot !!!
I just installed a chassis fan but that didn't change anything. I have a Geforce3 card and it is 61 C degrees hot.
The exhaust air from the power supply is 41 C degrees and the room temperature is 25 C degrees.

BTW: I heard that ASUS motherboards measures CPU temperature different than other motherboard manufactors and thus CPU temperatures messured by ASUS are higher on an identical system with an other type of moterboard. I don´t know if there is anything to it ?

For comparison I have a Silverado fitted to my 1.2GHz Athlon (Thunderbird), I substituted Arctic Silver II in place of the thermal compound supplied by Noise Control. I run my Silverado at 12V and with cpu at approx 100% load (SETI running continuously) with ambient temperature currently at 23C I have motherboard temp of 27C and cpu temp of 43C

A 1.2GHz Athlon dissipates a maximum of 66W and a 1.4GHz uses 72W maximum, so your system has to get rid of approximately 10% more heat so I would expect your cpu temperature (assuming equal ambient temperature) to be about 45C at maximum load.

Whilst I beleive Arctic Silver thermal compound is better than many alternatives I would not expect that difference to account for more than 2 to 3C temp reduction.

You could try running with one side of your case removed to see what difference that makes, but I would be inclined to re-check the heatsink fitting, or perhaps remove and refit your Silverado.
Let us know how things go.

Hey, I'm yet another one in your situation (since yesterday). I'm quite amazed at the poor performance. I know I don't have CPUIDLE installed, but still, geez...
My specs:

1.4/266 @ 147 on an Epox 8K7a+. Vcore = 1.82 (as per Sandra)
WITH a Silverado, WITH Artic Cooler II, WITHOUT cpuidle.
The Silverado's fans are at the 12V setting, ~3200RPM.
Temp = ~50C...!!
Btw, my case is well cooled with 3X120mm, it sits at a constant 27C, so the problem is only related to the CPU's heat and it's dissipation.

Is cpuidle really going to make a ~20C difference? Did Tom use cpuidle when he tested...?

Keep us posted on any findings, I'll do the same. :)

Core temp is 1.75 volts, used thermal paste that came with silverado - just put small drop like it shows in instructions on the heatsink. Im wondering if you are supposed to feel wind blowing out of the turbines or are they supposed to be sucking air in?

'turbines' can only suck air in and blow down onto the heatsink. It's a 'blower' fan which can only operate correctly in 1 direction.

if you are looking for cooling,A full tower is what you need ...Over kill? maybe...but you get lots of spots to put things.Im running a full server tower..2 80mm,1 40mm,and 1 120mm.The 120 is rated at 130cfm...My cpu cooler is a FOB 38..This thing runs cool under any condition..If you have an Athlon,or a Pentium, the bigger the case the better of you are...As CPUs get faster,No matter who makes them ,they are going to generate heat...Well that is my opinion..Since i have a Athlon..Besides,when you have to work on the thing it gives you more room..Good luck

I have now removed and refitted my Silverado, and I could see on the mark on the silverdisk that i wasn't centered properly. So I turned the cooler around so the silverdisk now is centered over the CPU. Before I ran THINK (SETI-like program) to give 100 % CPU Load. I have now disabled the program and installed CPUidle and the CPU load is app. 0 %
AND THE TEMPERATURE IS STILL 65C ??? (it lies between 61C-69C )
I have tjecked the Silverado, and both fans are running, and the heatsink is fairly hot and I have applied at little drop of the thermal paste that came with the Silverado. So it seems to work properly and it does keep the temperature constant whether 100% CPU load or 0% CPU load - but still 65C is HOT HOT HOT .....

Am i missing something here ? How did they get it down to 37C in the cooling guide ?

System:
Athlon T-bird 1,33 GHz (not overclocked - yet)
ASUS A7A277 (ALiMAGiK)
Silverado Noise Control working at 12 V (directly connected to the Motherboard
ASUS Geforce3
256 MB ram PC2100

I just realized... You have a 1.2G @ 43C. Tom had a 1G @ 36C. Don't you think you are also much more hotter than you'd expect? I do... :/

Overclock schmoverclock. When will fast be fast enough? This reminds me of 30 yrs ago when auto buffs had to have the biggest crane cam, edelbrock manifold, and holley 850 carb and they whined and complained because the car wouldn't stay running at idle. www.underclockers.com

give me a break macodi. I love this stuff - go away if you want a "quiet" pc. I have two Sunon 120's @108 cfm each pumping 8 80mm exhausters. Yeah, it may be loud, but I can oc my 1.2 to 1.533 with all the stability in the world.

A N D . . . .

if quiet is what you want (based on the fact your link takes me to http://quietpc.com) use a Koolance h20 system. feeds eveything incl ps and runs super quiet (for an oc system). And if you want really really quiet. I have a PIII700 micron laptop that I'll be damned doesn't run a single fan 97% of the time. Can you say "Dead quiet."

Buy the Millenium Glaciator instead. Save yourself half the money. With your Nick...it`s fitting for sure 😉

I want to die like my Grandfather...in my sleep...not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Gee, I guess nobody has a clue what's happening to us. We even have a "Where to buy a Silverado?" message in this thread... Welcome to Bizzaro World...

El Wavero have you tried MBM5 to check your temp because I have a celeron 600@1008 on an asus p3v4x. When I checked my temps in the Bios it was 65c and when I checked it with MBM5 it was 36c. Then I found out that the temp monitor on my Bios sucks and cannot be trusted.

Mama always said "There's no such thing as a stupid question if you don't know the answer"

No, I havent tried that yet. I will do that later tonight when I get home from work. Also, as a slight update we finally turned the AC on in our house and the cpu temp now ranges from 48 idle to 52 loaded as opposed to the 58 idle 62 loaded temps from before. I guess i just didnt really realize how hot it was getting in that room. It does also help though that the computer is right by an air vent that shoots ice cold air directly into the front of the case where it is then sucked inside. ...Anyway Ill check out that program and get back with the results.
