What's the lineup on your hardware going to be in the proposed HTPC? Perhaps you're looking into a specific function/feature set from said HTPC chassis or connectivity perhaps?
I have a couple of ways I can go but basis of system would both be ITX motherboard. I have a GTX1080 for use with either build. I have CPU coolers for both that will fit, and a choice of PSU size. The specific feature I am looking for is for it to fit inside my "media cabinet". One of the systems is an 11600K which I fear will be too hot. The other is an R7 1700.
I have been using the HTPC beside the cabinet for years and in different configurations. Previously I had just been unhooking the PC from that location during the holidays as it sits within the space occupied by the christmas tree. In some years I left it there and ended up with sap on and in the machine, which is no bueno.
This year I happened to have a Dell DT model with a 750ti that didn't sell from the last group of refurbs I worked through. I put it inside the cabinet and like the placement and more importantly the wife likes the placement and is wanting me not to place my larger computer back out to the side.
The other aspect of this is that running the wiring into the cabinet was a sheer PITA and I am not really wanting to undo that work and have to snake and untangle the wires back to the other location. IE, inside this stand are the cable box, receiver, center channel speaker, and all the wiring that pertains to. TBH, if I choose to just put the built as system back, I am likely going to have to pull the whole cabinet away from the wall and rework all of it. I just don't want to do that. It is swept under the rug as it were, hidden behind the cabinet, and I can pretend I didn't see it.
😉
My fear, and much as you relate, is the limited cooling as it pertains to all this manner of cases. I appreciate the link and will give a look to their experiences. Thank you for that.
Edit- of note, the "media cabinet" I am using is actually a sideboard for a dining room without the hutch aspect. It is a really nice bit of furniture that was purposely purchased for the way it matches the rest of the furniture, and not so much because its design makes wire routing easy. The unit is a bit longer than 5' and has one small hole in the lower shelf which routes under the unit and out another hole on the bottom back. At this time there is no modification or damage that would keep it from being utilized as a hutch again, such as like if we moved to a house that we wanted to utilize it that way.
