Silverstone SG05 power supply burned out?

I just built up a system with SG05 and turned it on. Everything seemed fine and I was excited, since this is my second build, and my first with Mini-ITX. With the system running, I unplugged my keyboard and mouse from the USB connectors on the front of the case to the back. Suddenly there was a loud bzzzz like a chainsaw and metallic smoke came out of the power supply. Then all became silent. I suppose the only way to test that only the power supply was affected is to try another power supply? Silverstone sells a bronze version of the 300W power supply that I can use with this case.

before you pay for a unit what were you trying to run in the case?? were you under the 300w limit of the power supply?? also as it new contact the case vendor for an rma. if your running a higher end gpu you may want see if there a 500w power supply that will fit your case.

I've only just put the following together:

SilverStone SugoSG05 300W (the power supply is not bronze, and it came with the case)
i3-4340 3.6GHz 54W
ASUS H81I-PLUS (this is a Mini-ITX H81 board)
8 GB Memory

I haven't put in a graphics card or a hard-drive yet. I'm thinking if I do choose a graphics card, I'll find one with the lowest power, such as the ASUS GeForce 210, that's only 75W. I'm also planning to put in a Seagate hybrid drive.

I would contact the case vendor for a new unit. also check that there no bent pins or metal shield in the usb ports.

Also verify that the MB standoffs were installed correctly, and that the MB is not shorting against the case, that no wires were cut underneath the case, etc. Power supplies do fail, and the failure rate is hugely higher in the first few hours of operation. I'd just try to rule out a short before putting it back together.

After thinking about this, I think I'll see if I can return it for a replacement.

An update:

I realized I already sent in my rebate for the case, which included the PSU, and Silverstone's policy is to not allow returns without a UPC.

I then decided to just buy another PSU, but the local store only had the 450 ESX power supply, which I ended up buying.

After putting my box together again with the new PSU, I turned it on (with great trepidation). To my joy, the PSU is working great. I even think it has better cord protection (or perhpas it's just cord management). I'm almost ready to put the closing wraps.

Bottom line: the power supply that came with my Silverstone Sugo05 was faulty from the beginning.
