Question Silverstone TJ07 in 2019?

Just a quick one...

Putting a new rig together based around the 9900K (or Comet Lake) and was planning on using my existing case which is a TJ07 as mentioned in the title.

I've been very happy with the case and am fan of the no-frills, all aluminium design, just wondering if there have been any major developments over the last decade or so (yikes!) which would make a newer model preferable; or indeed any issues I should be aware of, for example motherboard fit?

Speaking of motherboards, I'll probably be going with an ASUS Maximus XI variant, and the PC: a 9900K (+ Noctua NH-D15), 64 GB RAM, 2080 Ti, 2x M.2, 2x SSD and 2 standard HDDs (or similar arrangement). Usage is 3D/2D work and gaming.

I was going to pull the trigger on this early May (from PC Specialist, sending in my own case), but think it's worth holding out another month or so to see if any news emerges regarding Comet Lake.

• new cases have cable management, way better than what yours does.
• no 5.25 inch drive bays, replaced by ssd trays and mounting points
• have support for RGB lighting,
• most of them now look like fish tanks and have bad air cooling because of fact glass doesn't breath well.
• Most new cases have filters on their fans, something that wasn't a priority when your case was made.

I had a TJ09, I now have a FT02 which was designed using the TJ07 aluminium outer body but with a warped interior.

Alas, both these cases are old now (mines 9 years old) and Silverstone don't appear to make many Tenjin series cases anymore, chasing the more budget cases. I live in hope they make a newer FT02 as it will make buying new case much easier for me.

TJ07 can take E ATX boards, but website doesn't show dimensions so you may need to look inside and measure it yourself

Thanks for the reply and info.

Not a fan of RGB lighting, so that's not an issue.
Cable management is OK for me, quite tidy with my current setup.
Filters on the fans would be nice, also I'm not convinced that the airflow in the TJ07 is that all that efficient; 2 fans on top, 2 at the rear and two in the base covering the HDDs is fine (and the case is large and airy) but there are no fans on the front. That said, I've not had an issues personally.
An optical drive is useful to me as I have some old programs etc. on DVD.

Will likely stick with the TJ07 as it seems that even when spending around £300 a lot of contemporary offerings look a bit flimsy, with a combo of thin steel and plastic, and/or are a bit too cheesy for my taste. I'll take a look into mounting solutions for the SSDs as would be good to place them in one of the two HDD racks in the base of the case.

Maybe we spoiled by the quality of the cases we have now

My case was designed for airflow in mind, it has 3 intake fans at base of case which are more than enough to blow most hot air out of the case. I don't have any fans on rear or front, but then FT02 isn't a normal layout. It being so different makes it hard for me to look at normal cases and its only because Silverstone are thinking of remaking its sister case, the raven, that I have some hope I may get an upgrade and won't need to look at other case makers.

I am not into rgb either, my case doesn't need to light the neighbourhood up. That isn't its job. It doesn't even have a window.

I know someone who had a TJ07, they are legendary cases if a tad too big. MIne is about same size and I try not to move it unless I really need to, as they may be aluminum in some places, they still weigh a lot.

Main advantage to filters is I don't have to clean inside case very often. Though I have been meaning too again.

Yes, it is pretty tough finding a comparable case in the £200-£300 price range. And it really gets me that some in the £200+ category still use plastic panels with a 'metal-look finish'... and cheap plastic fastenings which appear to break easily. I mean, it's a box, with minimal engineering (most cases) and still not metal, for that price? FFS.

Unfortunately it looks as though the Noctua NH-D15 may well not fit the TJ07, which would mean I have no choice but to get another case. Really thought this beast would fit anything, almost didn't consider it! Frustrating.

This guy seems to have fitted one, but I don't know what the MB is etc. and as I'd be sending the case off to the company performing the build I can't get the parts and try first either:

EDIT: As the CPU cooler height specs are listed as a max of 162 mm by Silverstone and the D15 is 165, best not to chance it.

I'm already pushing the boat out somewhat price-wise and (aside from the fact that I like the look and build quality of it) I was hoping to retain my TJ07 to keep the cost down a little. Annoying to have to pay £250 for what feels like an inferior product (I can live without better cable management and filters are nice but not essential). Looks like Lian Li have some decent offerings, but I've only just started looking.

I have had a LIan LI, they always made high end gear and still have some really good cases. They may have copied some features of modern cases like too much glass for my liking. LIan li had filters on fans before Silverstone did, my lian li from 2005 had them then. I wouldn't see them as a step down at all. Fairly even.

brief look around, if you don't want a side panel made of glass, its hard to find anything. But case is something I took ages choosing last time and took my case as rest looked too plasticky and RGB covered for my liking. I did look at everything first just to make sure I couldn't find anything better. Or a reason not to use mine.

Yes, all sounds very familiar; no viewing window here either . Unfortunately not being quite wide enough to accommodate the D15 is a pretty big issue. I'm no pro so don't want to meddle with water cooling, and the 9900K needs a top-tier cooler.

I might even look at some smaller cases as not sure I need quite so much room, but I don't want to limit myself for future upgrades (a base I thought I had covered with the TJ07... Gggrrr...). The case linked above is actually slightly slimmer than the TJ07, but it's listed as having 170 mm CPU cooler clearance compared to the '07's 162 mm.
