A sim card is a different physical form than an SD card. can't read one with the other's reader.

Your laptop needs a SIM card slot and compatible modem, not a MicroSD card slot

Sadly, you can't do that! Wouldn't it be great though.

The sim card is just like a key! You need hardware in the laptop, ie a capable modem to use the sim card to connect to the internet. That hardware is not in any card converter, or the SD reader. There are lots of mobile broadband services around. Often just requiring a specific USB dongle with the capabilities built in. Search online for local/nationwide providers.
