Question Similar build to Jarred Walton's CPU+3080 test but not getting same FPS?

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra Gaming. I saw much larger performance difference between my 1080ti vs my 970 than the 3080 vs 1080ti. Perhaps I got sucked into all the hype but it was really and frequently portrayed as running RDR2 4k @60FPS Ultra, and I'm not getting that at all.

So Jared has a great article here: How Much CPU Does the 3080 Need?

My current build is similar to Jarred's i7-4770k OC (I have the 4790k stock with kraken x62 water cooling temps are usually at 35-40c under 4k gaming). Same ram, different ssd but plenty fast, and higher psu (900w/950w can't remember which one).

When I benchmark Red Dead Redemption on 4k Ultra I don't get average 70fps, mine is more around 46fps with a low of 35fps. I'm using a tv that caps at 60 so I'm curious why can't I get avg 60fps?

Is there some button on Precision X1 I need to click for the 3080 FTW3 UG to run in "game mode" or "boosted game mode"? (I have no idea how to use precision x1). Kind of sucks because I was so excited to use this card once I got it but I feel it isn't living up to the hype.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

(side note, I am planning to move to an Ryzen 5 3600 and a Ryzen 9 5000x but can't figure out if I should stick with B550 or X570).

what your ram?
what the cpu/gpu temp and usage during rdr2 on 4k?

Hi sorry I didn't get an alert for your reply so my apologies for responding late. I am using DDR3 16gb 1600mhz ram.

I ran more benchmarks to get readings, using vulkan (as I seem to get better fps with it)

Using MSI Afterburning with RiverTuner (for gpu monitorting), NZXT CAM (cpu monitoring kraken x62), HW Monitor (cpu+gpu) to check everything (closed all chrome and firefox windows before running test, fresh OS install as well. Game is up to date):

Leaving fans on Auto in MSI Afterburner:
CPU Temp:
  • Most scenes (like environment) were about 38-45c
  • Scenes with action (like shooting up the cops/carriage and blowing it up) about 45-51c
GPU Temp:
  • Most scenes (like environment) were about 60-65c
  • Scenes with action about 65 to peaking at 72c
Avg: 48

With fans at 100% speed:
CPU temp:
remained about the same, averaging about 43-45c

GPU Temp:
  • Most scenes (like environment) 50-53c
  • Scenes with action saw 55-58 with a peak of 61c
Avg FPS: 49

I thought the above was a bit weird when using 100% fan speed so I restarted the game with the fans already at 100% and then started the benchmark again and now I got an updated avg 54 fps with a minimum 43 and a maximum 61

It seems maybe I should just be using Vulkan then rather than DirectX. But I'm still curious why I can't hit that 76fps ?

thanks
