Simple really dumb question dealing with changing cable modems

If I change cable modems I will have to set my router up again correct, because of the change in MAC address correct? I know I have to get in touch with my cable company to get them the new MAC address so I can get service, but the computer I set the router up on a few years ago I no longer use and I would rather not go through setting up the router again. If that is the case I am just going to buy a cable modem wireless router combo and kill 2 birds with one stone.

cable company cannot give you a new mac address. they are tied to the equipment. should have no problems switching modems if you buy one on your own you have to call them to activate it on their end. My cable company just switched modems from the motorola surfboard to something else and all you have to do is reboot the router.

Right no I knew the MAC address was device specific I was just hoping to avoid setting up the router again lol. If a simple reset of the router will work thats perfect. My ISP just upgraded out local speed from 15Mbps to 50Mbps but my current cable modem does not support DOCSIS 3.0 which is the reason for buying a new one.

It should not affect the router at all except a reboot
