SimpleTech external drive won't recover files

Hello,
I have an old SimpleTech Simpledrive that I've kept older files on but haven't used very much otherwise.
It's slow, but usually works fine. I'm trying to access files that I know are in a specific folder, but every time I open it there's nothing there. Yesterday, I added some files to that folder and they disappeared as well.
Reading through the forums, I've tried several different antivirus scans that came up with minor things. I've fixed all of them.
Then I tried to use Recuva, but it's telling me it can't because portions of the drive are locked. I've never put a password on the drive.
I will say it has been banged around a few times, so I'm wondering if the drive has been damaged. It takes a while to access that particular folder and it's font is blue while everything else in the root folder is standard black. Not sure what that means.
I'd like to recover all the files and reformat the drive, but not sure how to. Thanks in advance for any insight.

UPDATE: tried Puran File Recovery, and it found the files. Most of them are in excellent condition. However, when I direct it where to recover the files to (on my internal hard drive), nothing shows up. I'm going to read through Puran's user guides to see what I can do.

Thank you for the idea. I've tried that, but I think the problem is something wrong with the drive. It's been giving me a "delayed write failed" error. I thought I had fixed that, but it returned again when I was transferring all of the other files on the drive to another drive.
I found this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/281962-32-windows-delayed-write-failed-external-hard-drive
I have a feeling it's a virus of some sort, but not sure how to address it on the external drive. All of the steps here refer to removing it manually from the computer's BIOS.
