Single Core to Dual Core = Reformat?

I own a socket 939 board with a AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4GHz singel core. I decided instead of spending a whole bunch of money and time I would stick with the 939 a little longer and just upgrade to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core.

My question is simple, when I swap out the CPU will I need to reformat Vista? I hope not....?

No you should not need to reformat. How ever you may need to update BIOS.

If you update the bios...do it BEFORE you switch the processors btw !

Since you're going from a single-processor system to a multi-processor system, you would have to reinstall (or "repair install") XP; not sure about Vista.

I didn't have to do anything on XP to turn hyperthreading on; if it can switch SMP on and off automatically for hyperthreading, I presume it can do so for a dual-core CPU?

If you're using XP with current SPs, it should be a drop-in. Download AMD Dual Core Optimizer. Possible BIOS update, but really, you shouldn't need to repair or reinstall.

Replace CPU, boot up, and check performance tab on task manager for two cores before you repair / reinstall.
