Hello all,
been lurking here for awhile. just built my first computer, so i'm still learning as we speak. i'm down to one last part; the monitor. i know i want a 27", and leaning towards 1440p resolution/144hz. my question is: is my card good enough to play the following games at max settings (with the 1440p/144hz):

GTAV
Metal Gear Solid V
Witcher 3

those are the only games i have in my system, and prolly last me a year since i'm not really a hard core gamer, per se..
for the rest of what's in my system:

i7 4790k
16gb RAM
Cooler Master EVO 212

Thx in advance!

It looks like Metal Gear Solid has a 60 FPS cap, so that may be as far as you can get anyway.

Really depends on what you consider playable. The charts I'm looking at say the single GTX 980 can run GTAV at max settings on 1440p and get around 45ish FPS.

So the answer comes down to what you feel is playable, for me that answer is a constant 60+FPS..which is why I am buying a GTX 980 Ti soon.

not really sure how 45fps looks vs. 60fps. understand that i've never played pc games before; just console. i just checked MGSV's setting, and it's on auto.
is the difference obvious?

@Spunjer, Short answer: No. A GTX 980 can't play 1440p @ 60 FPS maxed out, certainly not 144 FPS. Would those three games be playable and enjoyable with a GTX 980? Yes, absolutely. But if you really want 1440p with a chance of getting greater than 60 FPS then you'll want at least one GTX 980 Ti. All my friends and online acquaintances that want a shot of reaching anywhere near 144 FPS in 1440p have two 980 Ti's in SLI. If I were you, I would do the following:

Sell the GTX 980 on Ebay; I see used cards selling for US$400 - $450. You may get more but I don't know what manufacturer your card is from.
Buy new or factory refurbished GTX 980 Ti. One of those can be had for $589.99 - $649.99, depending on which mfg and version you get.

Another option is that you could simply buy your 1440p 144Hz monitor in the future, and see if you can live with a 980 (non-Ti).

thank you so much for everyone's response so far! this helped me tremendously...
originally i was gunning for the Dell S2716dg.. second choice is Benq XL2720Z, which is 1080p/144hz. how would that hold up (1080p/144hz, maxed out)?
btw, card i got is MSI geforce gtx 980 4gb twin frozr
