I'll be formatiing my PC soon to have a clean OS installation and I'm wandering if it is better to install two OS (Win 98SE and 2000) or just one (2000)

I use the PC for gaming, music, surfing and movie making as well as office and the usual programs.

My PC is a P4 1.7GHz, 256MB RAM, Intel 850MD motherboard, 40GB HDD Seagate, 6GB HDD Futzitsu, Sony CRX140S CD-RW, Creative DXr3, Riva TNT2, SBLive, Logitech MouseMan, Adaptec SCSI 2904CD, and Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem.

I found drivers for 2000 for nearly everything but the Sony CD-RW and the SCSI card.

I need to know if they are compatible with 2000 and if they are will it be better to have a dual boot (considering what I use the PC for) or single boot with 2000?

have a look at ntcompatible.com

are you playing older games? like 2 years back? in that case it could be good to have dualboot, otherwise go with only w2k...

I agree with Snorklis; unless you are playing with older games that are incompatible with Win2K, it's better to have a system with a single OS.

<A HREF="http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html?sess=no&cat=/Product/AVA-2904CD" target="_new">Adaptec SCSI Card 2904CD - Drivers</A>

Software updates for the Sony CD-RW can be found here:

<A HREF="http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/crx140scdwn.htm" target="_new">Professional (SCSI) CRX140S/C</A>

Sony recommends that you install <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp" target="_new">Service Pack 3</A>, and you should not install the B's Gold software, as it is not compatible with Win2K/XP.

IMO, i would just choose 1 OS. when you partition your drive it gets very confusing what you install stuff. IIRC i belive that partitioning can hinder performance. since you are using ur computer for related activities, mainly entertainment and some office, I would go with win98. Lets be honest here, win98Se is not THAT BAD... Newer, older, games all work well on win98SE. I used 2000 pro and i got some crashes here and there with some new games, NWN , warcraft... also a lot of stuff i cant use on 2k like my scanner... 98 is good enuff...who cares if its a bit old...

real philosophy of life: "do onto others what you dont want them do onto you"

basic partitioning will NOT hinder performance unless you get in the >5 partition per drive range.
In fact, its very handy for people who reformat a lot...its nice to be able to selectively destroy.

Yeah, partitioning rules.

Say you have a 60 gig drive. That outter 5 gig really hauls @$$. When you get in about 10 gig, it starts to drop down. Say from 45meg/sec down below 40meg/sec.

So, making a system partition of 5 gig or less will keep everything on that outter track. No matter what kind of f*kkked idea of defragmenting that win98 thing comes up with, it's still on the outside.

2 primary partitions, and 1 extended with 2 logicals is a good setup. You're not going to lose speed with that, expecially if you keep those 2 primaries as small as you possibly can. Figure, at the most, 2gig for win98, and 3 gig for Linux or WinNT.

But all things considered, I hate NT's bootloader. Lilo is a little better, but for 98/whatever, system commander rules.
