So I was going to buy a i5 4690k and mildly overclock it.
But then I came across the 6600 and 6600k and I thought this might be a better deal.
I have DDR3 ram so I thought of the Asus z170-p d3.
And maybe a non k 6600 (with a cheaper h170 board) can perform better than a 4690k.
So what will be the best and/or cheapest configuration in my gaming rig (r9 280x).
I'm sorry if this was already posted but I can't really find any ddr3 and 6600 non k comparisons.
Thanks in advance

Seriusly now , but for your R9 280X a I5-4460 would be perfect , it won't bottleneck anything and it will run smooth.
For Overclocking I would go for the 4690k or 4590k. Not worth buying a new motherboard and RAM and the Skylake CPU.
The 4460 should be plenty for your needs though and it's cheaper too.

Thank you for your responses.
I know a 4460 is good enough for me, but I'll probably run this setup for quite some time so I want to be able to overclock. I also like tweaking my pc.
But if there existed an unlocked 4460 I would definitely get one of those.
I don't have a motherboard yet, so I was just wondering which was better, since with this setup the skylake will only be ~$10 more.

Laviniuc, in the description it says this motherboard uses ddr3 slots.

So my question: Should I spend $10 more and get the 6600k with budget motherboard, or should I go with a somewhat better motherboard and a 4690k?
Thanks

From my understanding (i may be wrong here)

But im pretty certain ddr3 and ddr4 can not be swapped between each other in skylake or haswell-e

I think you have no choice but to get ddr4 if you ran skylake

Skylake supports both DDR4 and DDR3L, as long as the motherboard has the correct slots you can use either with a Skylake chip

I think this sums it up.

By the way, there is also the ASRock z170 pro4/d3 and the gigabyte hd3 dd3.
I dont really know which of the three is the best.

that's interesting, i mean i knew skylake can run on ddr3 but i thought only ddr3l - notebook small dimm's. good to know that they made motherboards with ddr3 modules support. sorry for the missinformation,

you should still make sure your ram is on this list

You're right. Most ram sticks are in there but (what are the chances!) I have corsair xms3 which needs 1.65 volts instead of 1.5 or 1.35.

I'll take a look at the other boards, or maybe I can find a way to change my sticks with a friend...

Thank you for noticing.

Edit: I did a quick search and the xms3 turn out to use ~1.57 volts, and I can also underclock them to get to 1.5.
