Hello,

I have an above-average laptop, but when I try to play Skyrim I get like 20 fps.
And no that's not when playing on ultra. That is when I set all settings as low as possible.
These are my specs:

i7-3160QM CPU @2.30GHz ( with Turbo Boost)
6GB Ram
NVIDIA Geforce GT 650M (Also Intel HD Graphics 4000 as integrated GPU)

Does anyone have an idea how to get Skyrim run like all the other games I can play with decent fps.
Because I expect Skyrim to run with like 30-40 fps on high settings.
Not with 20 fps on low.

Any help would be appreciated!]

While I find your comment quite funny.
It is not entirely true.
Of course a desktop can do much better.
But can you then explain to me why I can play many other games on 1920x1080 on high settings with above-average fps?
I can even play Battlefield 3 with decent graphics and decent fps.
So don't tell me I can't play games on my laptop.

Hi :)

If your Lappy cost LESS then $2000 ...that's why...

All the best Brett :)

Ow wow.
I all understand now.
It is not about your specs anymore.
Or about the temperature of your laptop.
No it's just about the price!
Damn.
All that after I pass all the recommended settings with this rig.
I dare to say you don't know anything about the GT650M, do you?
If you don't like laptops. Fine.
Don't bother me with your opinion and try to help me with my problem or just let me be.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Mustacio, and welcome to the boards. I'm sorry that the first person you met was the ever helpful Brett.

Anyway, you've got at GT650M. That should be able to be running Skyrim at ~25 fps on ultra settings. On the low settings it should be pulling closer to 80 fps. So regardless of what some people might say, you've got a (very) decent little workhorse there.

Do you have any mods installed for Skyrim? Particulalry any aimed to improve the graphics?

Hi :)

I own computer shops and sell laptops, both low and high end....

You don't like my advice that's fine, it doesn't make it untrue though...

All the best Brett :)

Hello,

Well finally someone who wants to help!
No I have, on purpose, not installed a single mod.
I haven't even installed the offcial texture pack released on steam just to be sure if that could be the cause.

Have you checked that skyrim is using the gt 650 and not the integrated hd 4000. I think there's an option to choose the graphics card in the options.

You mentioned in your original post that your processor has integrated graphics, I think you should turn that off as it's probably the default :p.

Yes, since I'm using optimus it could be possible my integrated card would run skyrim.
But I already set skyrim to be runned by the GT 650M in the NVidia options.
So neither that could be the problem.

Do you have one setting in the advanced tab turned right up? If I remember correctly, even on ultra all the sliders are not maxed. It might be that if they're all very low apart from one which is maxed then it would show as being on a low setting but render at low fps.

You could disable the igpu in bios just to be certain that the game is not running on it as it seems to be showing up as your main gpu in the diagnostics report.

You might be able to disable it directly from the device manager, I'm not sure how the integrated graphics represents itself.

Okay I will try!
But do you think that an integrated gpu could get 20 fps on low?
tbh that seems a bit too much for it.
I'll let you guys know if I've checked it.

Could you please tell us the model and make of your laptop, I may be able to find out info on how to disable the igpu.

20FPS sounds about right, assuming you are playing on 1920 x 1080.
20jrf2c.png

That is on 720P and they are getting ~40 FPS. 1080P is roughly double the total pixel count as 720P, so it makes sense that you would be getting 20FPS on the integrated GPU. Why you would be getting that on the GTX 650M is mysterious though. As the others have said it is likely Skyrim or Windows getting confuzzled and using the HD 4000 instead of your discrete GPU.

I have never had to worry about integrated graphics before, so I can't help you with disabling it unfortunately. Logically, it should of worked when you uninstalled the driver from device manager.

Anyway, good luck.

I'm still looking into it.
I will let you guys know if I know more.
For now I'm also checking all my drivers.
Since I don't want to disable my integrated GPU.

I am using it.
Optimus let's some programs run on your integrated GPU.
And other programs on your superior GPU.
The desktop, youtube clips and simple thing will be run by the integrated card.
Games will be run bu your superior card.
I just discovered my mistake though.
I made an exception for skyrim where it should defenitely use the superior gt650m.
But I used the launcher to start the game, I should have made a shortcut to the .exe file and now everything runs perfect!
Thank you for your help guys ^^
Good site!
