I have a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz, 6GB DDR2-RAM @ 667MHz dual channel, WD 640GB 7200RPM hard drive, and an EVGA 1GB GTX 560. I can put the game on High settings and get decent performance (25 - 45 fps) with minimal stuttering. However, putting it on Ultra results in a lot of stuttering, though FRAPS doesn't show much loss of FPS. According to my research, the most likely bottleneck is my CPU, but I'm thinking it could also be my hard drive having issues loading textures. The stuttering is most noticeable after loading a save and spinning in a circle. FRAPS still shows fps of about 20 - 25 when this happens, but it looks much worse to my eye. It still stutters noticeably when wandering around on Ultra, though not as badly as a fresh load + spin.
My Q6600 will overclock stably to 2.8GHz on stock cooling. The problem is that it turns my tiny office into a sauna when I do that. Since I have central air, cranking up the A/C isn't really an option as it would freeze the other occupants of my house. Would a fast Phenom (~3.0Ghz) eliminate any bottlenecks? Would an i5 run cool enough?
If the hard drive is the problem, my options are limited. SSDs are expensive and not nearly big enough to hold all of my "content". I'm not sure if a hybrid drive would solve the problem or not.
So am I better off getting a new CPU or hard drive?
