Hi There,

I've been a long time player of nethack/slashem on dos/windows machine,
but now my primary machine is a *nix (FreeBSD to be precise), but I just
can't get used to the h,j,k,l direction keys. Is there any way to setup the
cursors for input use?

Many Thanks

You want r.g.r.nethack, not r.g.r.misc.

After using vi a bit, you'll get used it and come to appreciate it. Be sure
to keep your fingers on the keyboard just as you would if normally typing..
index on J, middle on K and ring on L. It'll seem more natural this way.

You'll especially appreciate them if you have a keyboard like mine■,
that doesn't have a numeric keypad, and doesn't have arrow keys! For
this reason, I completely despise new roguelikes that only allow using
the keypad (actually, I can't play them at all).

Even when playing on a standard keyboard, I prefer the hjkl (+yubn)
direction keys -- they're simply more finger-friendly and natural than
the numeric keymap solution (which requires more hand-movement /
awkward-finger-contortions).

So, roguelike authors: _Please_ support the hjkl+yubn movement keys;
if you can't be bothered, at least allow user-defined keymaps so it's
possible for the user to implement this himself.

Thanks,

-Miles

p.s. I'm not a vi user though, in fact I don't like vi at all, but when
I'm forced to use it, I have no problems with cursor movement due
to my experience playing roguelikes... 🙂
